Targeting Fish

I've been reading up on heaps of the posts and the stuff I've come across mostly only talk about how to target specific fish, but not where around the coast they can be found.

Since I'll be traveling from Sodwana to J-bay to Mosselbay this coming December I'd like to get some input about where I can target what fish? Both eds and non-eds are on my list.

I've read all of neilg's dropshot "manuals" and kitted myself accordingly, so I reckon I'm pretty set for whatever comes my way, but think the advantage would be so much greater if I knew what I could expect where.

This is pretty much what I've learnt so far as to what I can target where this holiday:

Sodwana:

Kingfish

Pompano

Grunter

Elf

Leerie

J-Bay:

Cob

Leerie

Grunter

Elf

Mosselbay:

Grunter

Cob

Leerie

Elf

Am I right? Any recommendations?

On J-Bay

You can target Cob, Leerie, Grunter and Elf, but really don't just limit yourself to those 4.
Leerie and Elf you target early morning and late afternoon.
Cob you target around river mouths and in the Surf, more or less the same with Grunter.

Some art worms, some working water, some chum and you'll have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE ! remember if you only target big fish you setting yourself up for dissappointment.

I don't do J-Bay but know the guys catch nice Elf on the wall close to Marina Martinique. Was there once, but the sea was ON, didn't feel like getting hit by waves over and over again, so didn't fish there in the end. But again, it's Elf slaughter, wat byt ry skyt if you know what I mean. The guys also use HEAVY tackle, and I don't like fishing too much in those crowds.

In general the rocky areas in J-Bay are good, you can also expect Rockcod, Blacktail, Strepies, Cracker, Maybe Yellowtail and also Steenbras (to name a few).

If conditions were good and I had to choose between river and sea, well lets just say I would take the sea EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Look for deeper gullies and work them good and hard. But also don't throw away those shallow rocky areas, I've had a few good surprises in very shallow water.

Remember with this kind of fishing you do lose some terminal tackle, all part of the game.

If you in J-Bay for a few days then take 1 day, drive to Cape ST Francis, stop by the lighthouse, and walk down to the furthest point, you'll see it creates almost like a small bay, deep working water. ENJOY. Remember you will not win every fight in that hole ... GUARENTEED !

In that same area, casting into the open sea (to your right - oesterbaai direction) will put you into fights with BIG ELF and also some Yellowtail. Suggest heavier spinning tackle with 20+ kg leaders.

The suicide slipway (that's what I call it) by the museum (where the guys launch pencil ducks) is very good for some nice blacktail and LOTS of strepies.

Be prepared to move around, if a spot doesn't produce then move on !

thanks neilg!!!

I'm only gonna be in the j-bay area from the 27th to the 31st, so my time is pretty limited there, but will definately make some time for the lighthouse in cape st francis.

at this stage i'll target all i can find. be it big or small. for me just being next to the ocean with a breeze in my face is good enough, and anything i catch is a bonus. my p@#ph@l byt in elk geval altyd 'n gat in my onderbroek van opgewondenheid wanneer daar n vis aan die lyn is!!! met al die goeie tips wat ek sover hier gekry het dink ek ek moet maar hierdie jaar eerder comando gaan... hehe... minder onderbroeke om dan weg te gooi na die vakansie....hehe
