grootvis, what size braid would you use for connecting 0.55 mm to 1.0 or 1.2 mm with the double fg?

sorry, on reread i got the answer.
"...Try match the braid to diameter of mainline, but its not critical..."

Hi all.

I have a question on tying the FG knot. The first picture is of the knot before pulling it tight.
The second photo is after the knot is pulled tight.

Is it normal for the plaits to pull apart as at the aarrow in the second picture?

Regarding the FG,

Tip I can recommend,

Tie a simple double overhand loop in the end of the braid before tying your FG. Also, I recommend a rizutto finish. Once you have tightened by hand, put that loop around something solid, like a steel spike or anything solid you can hold, then pull it untill it welds itself. Now trim the tag. You will notice your knot has bent and buckled, perfect, now straighten it by pulling the leader/flouro both ends and then trim the leader, this straightens the knot out.

Its almost impossible to get a proper knot tensioned by hand, you might think it is, but its not.

the way I tied the fg in the photo with the arrow is as follows:

20 plaits followed by 10 overhand knots, each individually tightened by wrapping the braid tag around a nail and then pulling hand tight. this i followed with a 10 turn rizutto pulled tight with both ends of the braid wrapped around nails. I the pulled the knot tight again by wrapping the braid around the nail and this is when the slight pulling apart of the plaits occur. i have found that if i then tighten the rizutto again the plaits gets pulled tight togethet again but if i again tighten the complete knot they part slightly. it is as if the overhands and rizutto slips on the tag end of the leader.

if i may ask what do you mean with welded?

Hi Raaneip

Not sure whats gone wrong. Maybe too many half hitches. Rizutto.

If you make either of them too long the knot will fail. Many ways to tie it. Heres exactly how I tie it.

About 10 plaits max.
4 half hitches max.
4 turn rizutto.

Maybe try shortening yours by half as a start.

So after the storm of last evening we were in darkness till this morning.
Still did some tests by candle last night.

I upped my braid to 80lb and used 10 plaits 5 pairs of front and back and skipped the half hitches and finished off with 4 turn rizutto.

I also made my braid section a bit longer.

Lessons learned.

Tie the knot properly.
Use saliva.
Breaking strength is definitely related to the amount of effort you put into tightening down the knots. Try to get a feel for where your mainline will break and pull right up to that point. Rather break the line while tying than have the knot part while fishing.

I didn't use the scale last night but pulled until something breaks. If the knot is tightened down correctly it was always the mainline that parted.

Psy, what is your oppinion on the blob burning in the vid?
and in general is it advisable to use superglue on the knot?

Thanks again for all the input.
