in the meantime i found the name for the overhand knot in the sheath. it is called a willis knot and it seems to be used extensively to connect leadcore to mono. interweb seems to be happy with it. maybe it is just something to know of for if one day....

That is not an exact science but general use in RSA Rock and Surf rod building is as Follows

Grinder Braid to 200lbs Braid leader or up to 1.2mm on FG knot #12 over 1.2mm mono #16

Multiplier

0.35-0.6mm (line and or leader) #10 runner guides and tip

0.40-0.8mm (line and or leader) #12 runner guides and tip

0.50-2.2mm (line and or leader) #16 runner guides and tip

Over 2.2mm - don't try casting, use a Kite.

Somewhere on the forum (can't find it now) I read that you leave a 1cm leader tag and then serve over the FG knot.
Do you still recommend this and if so do you serve onto the braid and do you taper the serve from the end of the leader onto the braid?

So, coming full circle in my reinvention of the wheel I practiced the bimini twist to use with self made windon leaders. I must have tied more than a 100 biminis before I was satisfied with the result. After reading the attached article I have settled on 8 to 10 turns in the twist. I now consistantly get close to 100% strength in my tests.

It seems to me that one doesn't need to many turns in mono.

I still think maybe that you are over complicating things?

The only way to know is to tie them and test them against each other, and cast them and fish them...and retie them a few times on the rocks and break off a few stuck traces, then you will know what works for you..

The last one shows that if you really want the best knot, don't play games and learn the PR. My mate who is a professional guide and has his national colours, makes a tool with a little egg sinker and an inch or so long piece of stainless wire to tie the PR, and he has a quick method that takes as long or less even than my FG.

Either way you go, remember that you need a good working alternative/technique also, that you can do on the rocks in a flash when the fish are biting and you have to retie your leader setup for some reason. Lekker thread, thanks for all your feedback and keep it coming..
