So Monday the 18th come out of hospital, with long weekend approaching what better way to recover and relax than next to the water. So Wednesday afternoon after work we hit the road only for my vehicle to break down 240kim from home. Sat on the side of the road for 2 hours till the tow truck arrived and then got towed back home with all my plans for the weekend blown to hell. take the vehicle to the dealer only to find out the it was the gearbox, clutch, flywheel and pilot bearing that went and it'll cost just short of R30K.

so i should get my vehicle back today and then tomorrow we shall give it a second go this time at Oranjeville Holiday Resort as the wife and daughter are coming with and they want a "Rondewel" nevertheless this time i wont come home without a PB^^..^^..^^..^^..^^..^^..^^..^^..

Shall give a full report with pics next Tuesday if anyone is interested.

Friday Morning we arrived at Oranjeville Holiday Resort and were pleasantly surprised with the randawel that we were allocated. All was well till we went to the water to fish.

the first thing that worried me was the sight of the green algae that reminded me of Harties and i hope the Vaal doesn't become like that.

Nevertheless we got our lines out and started fishing, me for bait the rest for Carp etc. By 9am it became very clear that the owners/management were trying to cash in on the holiday season and squeeze as many people in as possible. We has an eight meter section of water which was located in a half round indent which meant from everyone's line of sight they were casting straight but when you take a look from the top everyone was casting over each other. when we asked them management to come down and assign a marker/tree on the opposite bank for each stand to aim at they were extremely UNHELPFUL. So my brother an i took it upon ourselves and with all the fishermens help we quickly divided the opposite bank up so everyone had water to fish.

After a slow days fishing of only one muddy for bait, i prepared it. At 18H30 the bait went out and at 21H15 this PB came out, small i know, but a Pb for now, 4.61Kg's

That was all for that evening. Saturday morning saw some muddy's come out for live bait and various other forms of bait. That evening i put out one live bait, and one half muddy which in turn produced this 4.6kg

the live muddy had a nice run after just over 10hours in the water only for the line to snap.

here is a close up of the second one with the hook up

Gamakatsu 8/0 Circle hook set nicely in the V .

Unfortunately Sunday and Monday saw me blank on the Barbel front. Sunday evening was a bit colder than the previous nights but one could see the bubbles from the barbel all around my bait but they just didn't want it.

so the trip saw 8 misses and two Barbel just shy of 5kg's. the resort it self i wont go to over a long wkn again, not only for their greed but the public ablution blocks sewage had started overflowing on the Saturday evening so for the rest of the long weekend you had to smell the stench of human SH1T which pissed me off more than anything else, you didn't want to eat as the smell made you nauseous.

Concrats on your new pb.

I went to Golden Moon (just around the corner from Oranjeville) the previous weekend and wasn't impressed with the venue for catching Barbel but didn't want to mention it to you before you went there but you actually did quit ok. The biggest cat that came out with our comp was 4,3 kg and the second biggest I did not even bothered to guess the weight. I did put out my big baits never the less but nothing at the end.

So ja I think you can be happy with your two Cats you caught.

nice catches! sorry about the car that sucks!!!

keep in mind live-bait in freshwater is not quite in line with the law... but no worries, now you know for next time :)

Hi, well done on the PB, I am getting extremely frustrated with resorts exploiting the fishing public, when I go over the weekend I usually book and pay for 2 stands just so that I have some fishing space. This past weekend I gave it a miss and booked for tomorrow until Friday. Hopefully everybody has gone back to work and we will have the place to ourselves, I am referring to Dimalachite. I have big plans with big baits, I have had my new fish-finder fitted to my bait boat and cannot wait to give it a try, will give a full report back when I return.

Hi Steve, as you say the resorts are exploiting us and its pissing me off, i'd rather be turned away than be pushed in and be cramped with space. good luck and hope your trip is fruitful. give us that report upon return.
