Cannot take safety for granted anywhere in our land of milk and honey. Be vigilant at all times. Safety first always. Never fish alone.
Usual flavours that always produce at the Vaal are pinksweets, banjo, bunspice, raspberry.
Use rietvlei slide trace with two hooks, one hook above the bomb and one hook below. If getting snagged then use just one hook.
Fish with a loose drag as the carp like to pick up the floatie and run with it. Lovely to hear the drag go. I have resorted to using Daichi chemically sharpened hooks as the carp and other fish usually hook themselves with this hook which is supersharp. No need to strike hard, simply lifting your rod to an upright position will set the hook.
I caught an 18kg barbel there on a rietvlei slide trace. The fish swallowed the bomb and both hooks and I just managed to land it .. had luck on my side that day.

To add, for the bigger fish you need distance, around the 150m mark I'd say. If you want to get a good spot with trees, (to shield against winds and the elements) you would need to get there quite early. The comp side still offers good fishing nevertheless. Besides what Phish mentioned, I've had success on plain maize (koo) and garlic floaties with earthworm, and don't underestimate the added benefit of a dough backing with your floaties. Good venue for cats as I'm sure you've heard - throw out a grassy head and see what happens t(((up((
