Tackle Maintenance

I’ve found this website to be very informative, thanks to all for their contributions.  I will be purchasing my first dropshot rig in the next month, I’m off to Madagascar (Fort Dauphine) on business for 3 months and would be able to fish almost every day after work (rock and surf and an estuary), I would be shooting myself if I didn’t take a dropshot rig along with my regular fly tackle.

 Considering it will be used on a daily bases, I will have to ensure that my tackle is properly maintained to keep it in working order.  I’m getting myself a Daiwa Exceler spinning reel, the question is how often and what kind of maintenance would be required on such a reel.


Any prefered oils or grease?

As to maintenance, the more you do the better...
Goes without saying that you rinse with fresh water after EVERY use... Don't slip up on this, you'll regret it!

If the reel takes a good dunking, open it up and service completely....
Otherwise if you fishing everyday, I'd service once a week...
Also, take care of your rods with fresh water wash downs everyday, and take care of your guides!! Often guides are neglected, but if you get a chip in them, you can kiss your braid good bye!!!

As to oils and greases, ask the tackle shop to provide you with some for weekly service.

And make sure you send pics of your catches!

Dunno what the rest of the guys take/s are on Quantum's Hotsauce reel oil, but I have personaly found it to be a great product, even if it's way expensive (some places sell it for up to R85 for 30ml's), I have also found that you don't (freshwater scenario's) need to service the reel all that extensive as with other oils and grease for that matter..... See if you get get your hands on a squeeze bottle or a tube (toothpaste like) of this, to me it's really a great product.
