Eish, but you guys pay a plenty for your chokka. You should speak to Kopstamp in PE. He organised me 30kg of chokka last year August at R35/kg.

Depends what quality chokka. IQF Jig caught export quality chokka has been between 90 and R100 for ages now.

The prices you guys are quoting is for block frozen stuff that is then defrosted and repackaged!!

You also gotta remember that the chokka fishery is'nt aimed at providing bait to anglers. Their market is mainly Europe and the Far East both of which are extremely specific when it comes to quality.

Frozen blocks of chokka destined for that market will have a card with each block carrying the name of the vessel from which it was caught as well as date of freezing. You also get trawl chokka which is cheaper as it is not quite up to EU standards. A lot of what you see as a bargain is this as well as blocks that do not quite make the grade.

It's still good bait though, but if you do want the best of the best, then you are going to pay.

As Greg stated, a lot of the sleeved chokka and other loose squid has been defrosted from a block and then refrozen. Thats why it always looks so perfectly fitted into its little condom. You will very often see excess water as well.

In my opinion, the only way to do that is by yourself. I've done it many times, and when you begin to feel like you're getting frostbite on your fingers, then you are doing it properly. You literally pry the frozen squid from the block.

You know you are using good chokka when after baiting up, your hands begin to itch. If you've caught and handled fresh chokka before, you will know exactly what I'm talking about!

And the best thing about good chokka is the fact that you can eat whats left over in the baitbox at the end of the day.
