Summer is almost here

Hi guys!

Just wanted to know when the barbel will be getting more active. And what bait (size and type) works best at which part of the season? And do the smaller ones bait more readily than the bigger ones. I don't care for size, just catching would be nice.

Thanks!

Try and get hold of some plat anna's. No better bait for catfish in the begining of the season, especially the smaller ones when you just want to catch a fish. Hook them on when still alive. The kicking action will draw any catfish to your line.

If you can not get hold of plat anna's then chicken livers will do.

This tip i got from a book and it works. Use your wife kenwood chef, mix 30% ox liver, 30 % ox heart, 30% sardine and 10% fat (any), put little cake flour just to bind mix make small balls and feed as if you are fishing for carp. Same applies when fishing for barbel. Then fish what ever bait for barbel. you will be surprised.

Use cutworms ' miswurm' its the grubs you find in the compost heaps, you can catch 2 to 3 barbel on each worm. also don`t give earthworms a miss.

Thanks Wetfrog! Don't think I have enough time to collect the grubs... :-(
Wish you posted earlier. Will remember next time. Earthworms I can still get... Will try to get some tommorow at a shop.

You must use grass carp for bait for the barbels best bait ever to catch a barber on. And you can use it during competitive fishing.

Platties is the best bait for barbel in my books, I was at roodeplaat on Thursday and got 3 on plattie, I lost 3 on a rattle trap aswell after putting the trebbles back on, I need to find a single hook that doesnt affect the action of the lure as every time I change to singles I dont get a touch, put the trebbles on and the cats cant leave it alone but the hook up is very difficult.
Soon I will go back to catch the one that took a bit out of this ones tail.

Naruto this time of the year "September" is a great time for those 6-10kg catfish in Harties.

If you spend some afternoons fishing at Barbel bay at de Rust you're going to get a lot of fish.

The Pta Defence anglers always fish their leagues their in Sep/Oct and they always weigh huge bags of fish averaging between 6-8kg with a lot of 10kg+ fish chucked in.

The best baits at that time of the year are always Flying ants (in the bank bag in the freezer from last summer), crickets or cockroaches (the big flying kind)

We put an empty 2l coake bottle with some wet white bread in it into a city drain (normally near Leons angling( mayville) and the next day it has some mini aliens in it.

You can now by Madagascan hissing crickets and or various crickets from petshops now.

This time of the year it would seem that any bait works but a smaller bait delivers more consistantly.

If you can't get these then a bunch of garden worms will get a bite but not as many as the previously mentioned baits

The barbel are in excellent condition at this time of year as they are fattened up and ready for the spawn.

yes Eathies and Miswurms/white gardengrub are really good if you have to make huge casts , Where we hunt , we make short casts , its easier then gooin big and bulky baits , the big baits is very affective , the small barbels dont hassle you cause they cant get the bait in thier bek!

i will throw any bait as long as its stinki, bloody and big !
we have also had good fish on lures , the past summer i hooked a couple a beasts with topwaters , jigs and texas rigged plastics , great fun !

Guys one of the most successfull Barbel baits baits in Zimbabwe was crabs we used to get more fish on platties but crabs alaways seemed to produce bigger fish.We used to take the meat out of the shell and put it on the hook.

One of my friends with a 6kg cat caught on earthwoms over the weekend at koppies. I caught 2 other ones of the same size, one on a small fish head and the other on a plattie. Will post the pics as soon as I have them.
