each scale is individually cut out and arranged on the lure , ref  of scale placement is taken from a real fish - fish needs to be the exact size of the lure so plenty of fishing needs to be done to get the exact speciman  ! else you can cheat by using a vynil thats precut . personally i skin my fish , stretch dry the skin then make a stamp out of it the scales are pre-painted using rare white camel hair all the way from kazikstan, the camel needs to be exposed to some form of radiation to get the correct hair tecture ............ I NEED TO FISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
