StructureScan by Lowrance in SA!

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Team Lowrance SA’s local angler James van Rooyen, to have a ‘sneak peek’ at the new LSS-1 Structure/Down Scanner by Lowrance.  This took place yesterday the 14[sup]th[/sup] Sep 2009 at Inanda Dam, KZN.

The most powerful aspect of the LSS-1 that hit me was the DownScan, with its crisp detailed images of the cover, such as grass, weed, brush and trees.  I have spent an immeasurable amount of time behind my conventional down looking echo sounders learning to understand and interpret what I see on the screen.  But with DownScan, there is no need for interpretation, a tree looks like a tree, down to the finest detail.  Each branch can be identified, and if fish are holding in these branches, they too are just as easily recognized.

When a technological breakthrough like DownScan is introduced to a sport like bass fishing, the most profound effect it has, is to give the entry to intermediate level anglers a boost of confidence second to none.  When fishing with an experienced guide on a body of water, the most important piece of information you going to get from him, is Fish Location!  He has spent many years fishing those waters and knows where to catch them, and as long as you tip him well – he will put you on to those fish.  Now, with DownScan you are effectively your own Pro Guide i.e. you can drive around and find the cover yourself, identify the cover with ease, and see if that specific piece of cover is holding fish, and if so – where in relation to the cover are the fish holding.  If I was an advocate, that would be my closing statement and I would return to my seat – “Case Closed!”

Welcome to a New World of Fishing, and it’s called DownScan, by Lowrance.

Awesome bit of kit! Looks like technology is swinging the balance more in favour of us fishermen.

This should increase the success rate of most anglers and unfortunately place bigger pressure on the fish stocks. Where do I order one^^.......lol

We are about to install a HDS 8 on our cobra cat for saltwater use & this down scan technology seems awesome - can one link it to the new HDS range? Is it available yet

what is the saltwater application like for this product?, i mean is it pretty depth limited???
You have full High Definition at 150ft.  For more than that its as simple as pushing a button.  You would have to cross over to the unbelievable 30 000w (analogue equivalent) power of the Broadband technology in the 200kHz and super deep penetrating 83kHz offered by the same unit - the HDS by Lowrance.

Yes Rory, you will get the full benefit of the LSS-1 on your HDS8.  On a single screen you can have all of the following:-
1. DownScan
2. StructureScan left
3. StructureScan right
4. Conventional 200/83kHz Broadband*

*this view can be switched to zoom, flasher, bottom lock or dual frequency view! ::S

Congratulations on your awesome purchase. :wfish

Really appreciate your advice - do you need to buy a separate down scan 'transducer' tant plugs into the the HDS?

Yes Rory,

I just had a chat with Liz Plotz of Lowrance SA and she has confirmed that South Africa will be the second country after the USA to receive stock of the LSS-1.  This is going to be top of the wish list in time for Christmas.  ^^..

really amazing stuff, so fishton just a quick question what is the difference between structure scan left right and down scan?? I mean the terminology is pretty self explanitory, down as in down, left as in to the left and right as in to the right, is it all the same technology just different viewing angles?? thanks
