Hey Eckart, you wanted some stories?  Here's one all about spearos, but not about fish :)

A good mate, Alastair, drove to Arniston from Cape Town (a regular trip for CT divers to get at the bigger fish in the blue water) with an unnamed skipper (let’s call him Deon) and crewDeon was keen as mustard as he had just mounted a new console on his boat.  Arniston is a notorious slip, where the launch is always a hard slam of the boat off the trailer, timing the swell, and hoping to hit the sand and not the slip.  And the retrieve is treacherous, best at low tide when you can beach on sand and then winch onto the trailer – I have driven to Struisbaai (15 miles) from Arniston, rather than risk retrieving my boat on that slip, more than once).

But anyway, I digress: Al was there with these guys, and they kitted up, and then reversed hard to drop the boat off the trailer, but nothing happened.  So second time around they went harder, but still no luck.  So they pulled back up the slip, and checked all their lashings were gone, and then gave it real horns for attempt number three, with everyone shoving as well.  Still no luck, and they pulled up the slip again to see what the problem was.  Finally, they worked out that Deon’s new cunningly mounted console held the key.  The rocket scientist has screwed his mounting screws right through the hull into the docking boards!  Boat screwed to trailer!

Hee hee,I still smile every time I hear that one.

I have a similar story not involving any fish :

Also not mentioning any names,a certain skipper had become renowned for leaving the bungs out of the hull before going to sea,so had a HUGE sign printed and put on the consol right next to the helm as a reminder.

One September we had a competition out of Yzerfontein, halfway out to the island the boat in question came to a sudden halt as the rear end started sinking, took the guys almost ten minutes to realise what the problem was :fbash

Brilliant! Good hearing some funny stories! I posted one a while ago about a wave nearly flipping our boat and we even had the unique opportunity to surf the wave before we got enough speed to get over the wave!
a real heart stopper!
