Stories from South African fishers

[SA Shark Conservancy]

Dear all,

The South African Shark Conservancy (SASC) - a NPO dedicated to promoting the sustainable use of elasmobranchs & other marine resources - is in the process of compiling "true life" stories from South African fishers who have witnessed recent changes in the marine environment.  Specifically, we are searching for information on fish population declines, environmental changes & interesting phenomenon. 

SASC believes that fishers have unparalleled insight into the marine environment - insight that is often overlooked - and that this information can prove valuable to scientific and management authorities.

To track these changes we are interested in compiling a book of these stories from a variety of fishing sectors, including the commercial and recreational industries.

As an organisation we believe it is crucial to include ALL stakeholders in the development of management strategies. This includes working closely with fishermen toward holistic co-management strategies - a conservation approach that we feel needs to be applied more often. After all the Ecosystem Approach to (Fisheries) Management includes human beings too.
