OK, back from a bit of fishing over the weekend at StLucia. It as nice to see the vibe of the area back with the tackle shops opening at 5:00 in the morning , the parking lot full at that time of the morning and the shoreline dotted with fires and lights making it quite safe to not only leave the car but to wander out by yourself and not be the only person around.
I managed to get two bouts of morning fishing in as I also had some things to sort out in the town which took my days up but am going up with some fishing buddies this weekend for a proper go.
Fishing the mouth I picked up 7 grunter and 4 pompano. The pompano came in on pink prawn whilst the grunter were preferring thin sardine baits. The size were all small revolving around the 1 kg mark so they did not get the honour of gracing my frying pan with their presence and rather went back to their families to bulk up a bit. I fear though that will not happen as there were quite a few groups of anglers who were putting absiloutely everything into their cooler boxes including soapies which they were pulling out by the dozen. To make things worse they were doing it in full sight of Parks Board who seem to be only concerned about the odd green shad coming out and obviously have a view that grunter and pompano dont fall into the size restriction list
.
It was sad to see undersize being kept in the volume I saw this weekend, if this continues be assured this area will suffer some serious stock depletion at a time when the Estuary is trying to recover from the devastation of the past few years. If ever there was a time for the Parks Board to step up to the plate it is NOW yet I think their general lethargy will continue to dissapoint us.
