Sterkfontein Dam

Hi Guys,

I will be visiting Sterkfontein Dam, (Qwantani Resort) the first week of March and also need some advise from fellow anglers.

I know that this dam is renown for their yellowfish, I did a bit of reeding and there are 9 species of yellow, just goes to show I still have a lot to learn.  Yellows for me is either big mouth or small mouth!!

Two questions,

I would like to target the yellows on artlure but NOT flies, any advise on what lures to use?  I would guess small spinners, fish imitations should do the trick?  I know there are nimf and crab imitations but this surely is only on flies?

What about Carp and then of cause Barble, a dam that size should surely keep these fish as well, any bait or general advise would be appreciated, I will be taking the rubberduck with so I can also get some distance if required

Thanks Guys

Big barbel in the dam we used to rattle our rod tips in the water and watch them come to it from over 5m away but didn't try catch them with 4x tippet. As for yellows largies will chow any lure I'm sure we used big wolly buggers etc but they hard to find the smallies are full up I recon sadas will operate try google flyfishing sterkfontein or dave weaver he put out a very comprehensive map and details of the spots. Ps good thing u got a duck if a storm comes up u gonna need an unsinkale boat enjoy

Hi Tiny

For largemouth yellows I would troll or cast Rapala Shadraps or Salmo Pech.

For smallmouths you can cast nr1 - 2 DAM Effzett spinners in silver colour, reel it in as slow as possible and vary between bringing it in shallow or deep. You can also use Salmo Hornets nr2 or Salmo Minnows for them. Just cast out the lure and bring it in with a consistent speed, vary your depth untill you find out at which depth they prefer it. Here are a few pics of yellows caught by my dad on lure at Sterkies
