I just returned from my week at sterkfontein and had a wonderful time there. Lets see where to start the weather was great just started getting cold but was quite warm during the day as far as the fishing went... 1st day went out on the boat for about 4 hours and only managed to catch 1 bass of about 500grams.
The second day another 4 hours and nothing to show for it. The reason being is there is alot of structure all over the dam and is not a problem to find the problem is the dam is deep and i didnt realise how this would be a problem i fished the sides and just the sides depths ranged from 8 - 25m so i would suggest if ur going to take a boat dont bother going without a fishfinder or alot of luck
as we pulled into the harbour on the 2nd day i saw many large bass all over 1kg.
The trick to sterfontein shore fishing is get a pair of polaroid glasses i used bondiblu ones got them for R160 but boy do they work like a dream it almost feels like cheating when u sight fish for bass in water that is crystal clear. So for the next 3 days i only fished the shores and mostly by the harbour the best times i have found are between 6 and 8 in the morning and 3 and 6 in the evening i even fished there in the evening as they lit the harbour by night.
Now ill give my opinions on what lures to use cranks did not work at all, top water lures didnt work either the only lures that did work were 3' pumpkin seed senkos and watermelon pepper 5' senkos and when fishing in the evening the black 5' senkos work the best i used the damiki brand of senkos they cost about R35 per pack of 8 of the 5' and 10 of the 3' i must say they are good quality and can be used over and over again nothing but those lures worked rig them texas style with a small 1g split shot.
The fish in the dam are agressive and will hit the lure and they will hit it hard most of the time u dont even need to strike them. They all put up a good fight and even the 200g one i caught yesterday put up quite a good fight.
Out of the 7 days the only fish i saw were bass and yellow fish strangely bass were the majority not one carp, kurper or barble not one so i have no idea what the bass were eating cause in the evening wen i shone the light on the water the yellows and bass were swimming together. I guess frog lures might work as well as there are many around the water side.
Unfortunately i pulled out no piggies but i did get a new pb of 1.5kg, the guy i was fishing close to pulled out a 4kg from the shore i have heard that there are monster bass in that dam.
The weather was good but sunday morning the waters did get a bit rough but not once during the rest of the week was the water conditions even remotely bad.
I would def recommend going to sterkfontein if u get the chance i stayed at qwantani but they do have day visitor rates not sure of the price though. Its water is crystal clear there were 2 bank fisherman wen i was there boat traffic is almost non existant because all the boats drive out to the far end of the dam and there is no pollution safety isnt even an issue so i hope that my report helped and ill post some pictures of the fish and the dam.
