Steenbras @ fishoek

According to a friend that was in fishoek end of last week ther was a boat that brought in nets, they were targetting harders and the 1st time they brought the nets in they were filled with very decent size steenbras, of course they released them all, as there were inspectors on the beach (Thank Goodness)!

Another reason y maybe the sharks are active there, as opposed to the fact that the water is warmer due to our weather of late?

Just thought i'd share

Was it the green boat with the Ford (Naartjie) or the blue boat with the Landy?(Chris)

If you see it happen please tell the owner/head  of the trek immediately!

NO they are not, but they will if they think they can get away with it. Best is to confront them, then they put them back.

where r u situated jb2? If I had to guess I wd say u fish sandvlei. If that is the case I have been trying there for leervis for awhile without success, and cd use some help/advice. tried all sorts of lures and plastic. Can't seem to get any livebait, and I won't throw a net in there. Any chance of some help?

Hi

What made you guess Sandvlei:spite

I stay in Marina Da Gama and I have discussed the use  of a cast net with the reserve manager and the people at MCM.

The previous (1988) act did not apply to estuaries. The 1998 act does include estuaries. Since the MLRA is national legislation and the prohibition on cast netting is municipal legislation, the MLRA should trump it.

The prohibition on cast netting is problematic at best and trumped by the post office permit at worst.

The Integrated Coastal Management Act is designed to clear all this up but it will take some time.

Assuming you have got some harders for live bait, the next step is to go for a swim.

You will notice in summer that the top part of the water column is very warm and therefore deoxygentated.

This means that the strop for the livebait must be long enough to allow the bait to settle in the cooler water about 2 foot down.

The other issue with the swim is that besides stomach bugs you also pick up an idea of where the heaviest weed growth is.

Rather pull your harder in and recast than let it hang aroundheavy weed.

jb2 great information as always.  Huge asset to sealine!

Thanks for that!

Have you not followed earlier posts that suggest that I am the spawn of Satan and that I am corrupted by:

the treknetters/ shark longliners/ foreign registered tuna boats owned by (insert usual xenophobic perjorative) Japanese.

Are you sure you joined this forum in 2007!::jest

Hi Shuffles

I've noticed that the temperature gradient in the upper reaches of the vlei remains quite consistent and needs some serious wind to get it moving again.

It also might explain why some of the closed inlets will be unproductive while the fast moving channels will work.

The other thing to consider is that the salt water and fresh water will not readily mix. The denser salt water will settle and the fresh water will move over it and form a "salt water wedge".

I often forget that hydraulic features are as much a part of the "structure" of a  body of water  as a tree stump or a sand bank.

I remind myself that the leervis's closest cousin is the yellowtail. When we look for yellowtail, we are scrupulous about finding just the right colour and quality of water.

A leervis has adpated to a far wide tolerance of water conditions but he still has his preferences.

Unfortunately that is about all I know about the water in vleis!

If there is someone on the forum who knows their way around esturarine hydraulics then we would be sorted!
