Starting with Spearfishing

That I'm aware off. Still believe that with regular visits to the coast it is possible. Even training I believe can be done anywhere.

Hi..

we spend quite a bit of time in the gym (pool) training especially cardio (cycle or spin) . nearest ocean to you is durbs, nice warm water with good fish life.
suggest you get a mask, fins & a gun of course & go for it - get comfortable in the water first & then start aiming at them fish..
Learn to read the water - always look for easy entry & exit points. Put safety first

Your best bet is to hook up with someone with some experience
to see over you for your first 10 dives or so.

This realy is an amazing hobby.

Please never dive alone
Good luck

Thank you for the advise.

I'm doing scuba diving as well,so definitely realize that safety is very important. The free diving will be something new to me. Will cardio and pool sesions be enough to get the desired diving time?

Any advise on equipment to start off with?

Sorry man..

your initial Question sounded like you are new to the ocean.

Training : Cardio remains the best , especially legs as they will be doing most of the work most of the time. also endurance, once again your legs need to keep you afloat & work constantly getting you to & keeping you at the surface.
Breathold: dont eat b4 diving - digestion uses alot of oxygen, & rapidly decreases your breathhold. also carboload - helps for endurance.
Gear: if you happy with ur mask stick to it or change to a low cavity for wider vision (personaly i use a cheapo - best fit for my face) & of coarse longer finns . they must be long & soft. like the carbon ones that you get Cressie.

This is all about legs & lungs.

Hope this helps.

Join one of the clubs that play underwater hockey.

That is very good training and a lot of those guys spearfish.

Gauteng has a spearfishing team and the guys go down to the coast regularly.

Speak to the guys at the clubs, that is your best bet.

Dont forget about http://www.trevorhutton.co.za

He does run regular courses up in Gauteng and if you train with him you'll have an absolute blast when you get to the coast.

He caters for everyone from beginners to advanced divers.

I did a course with him and I can tell you it's mind boggling to see what he can get you to achieve by applying a few small basic techniques!

Have fun :wfish

Rule number 1 - NEVER EVER DIVE ALONE!!!

This also applies to training. DO NOT EVER TRAIN alone in a pool. More spearo black-out happen in swimming pools than in the ocean.

If you can, DEFINITELY do a freediving course with Trevor Hutton. You will learn the safety aspect of diving as well as the PROPER way to dive. This way you don't pick up bad habits.

As the others have said, join a club or get some friends who also want to dive or are already diving. The club route is the easiest and quickest way for you to learn.

Above all, HAVE FUN!!!::S::S::S

Memoirs of a Freediver by Dr. Gletwyn Rubidge. Do yourself a favour and google his name. Gletwyn is ,in my opinion, one of the best spearos in SA.

This is a tutorial course you can easily follow via internet and then give feedback and submit your progress in the form of assignments.

Various theories are explained, you learn how to interpret weather, gym exercises etc.

Its amazing how you will progress in physical and mental ability in terms of hunting fish.

Whats more is Gletwyn is easily available for consultation.

I see you live in PTA. I used to train with a bunch of guys as the Dive pool just down from Brooklyn Circle at the back of the bird sanctury. Take a drive past and ask when the guys train. They are a great bunch of guys and organise dive trips etc and give good advice on equipment. On that note I have a Rob Allen railgun yes it cost a little more but I have had no problems and the after sale support is great. Pay attention to what Miles says and then read it again and then again, blackouts happen when you least exspect it.

Hi, and contrary about spearfishing in Pretoria, some of the pretoria lads came through to Wemmer Pan the home of TURG, in JHB and clandestinly removed one or two of the specially imported chinese weed eating fish!!...ah well boys will be boys, TURG Spearo's just a bit disapointed we didn't think of it first,

As for a good place to start I would suggest a course with Orca Trading speak to Craig Scott or email him at Orca Trading there in the book, tell him you you spoke to John Mac, cheers and good luck, you will love it.

Hi Japie

I run courses in Johannesburg and Pretoria. I am hoping to get to Joburg/Pretoria around November sometime.

Let me know if you would like a course information pack.
