SPRING HAS SPRUNG

We fished the first of what will be many comps this year at Heartsease at Vaaldam.

Wind gave us a sand blasting at a stage but we got more than just a suntan, more like a sunburn and go to do some nice fishing.

For the 3rd Comp in a row John-Craig beat me in terms of the biggest fish but I set the record of last month's club comp straight.

For interest, the fish averaged over 2.3kg for the comp with the biggest over 5kg.

Martin and Anthony arrived late (they went to the GPS coords of last month's comp)

Anthony tried with his rods to get the distance Martin is getting with his new G2's only to take some skin off his casting finger and then to revert to sensible distances

Be that as it may he got his Mombakkies off.

John-Craig and Sage (his provincial team mate) had a good old tussle and they ended 6 fish 12.05kg and 5 fish 12.10kg John-Craig coming out to the good with 9.5pts

They both had a 4kg Grassie in their bags with Sage taking the biggest.

The winner of the day had 16 fish 41kg (all the way to the right against the farm fence)

John-Craig did me with average fish size and biggest fish but I at least got double his points with numbers.

Must say coaching for his October SAFBAF tournament at Heartsease wasn't an issue as he provided me with the bait (it worked)

John-Craig's peg mate, Sage with his dad, "My Peg mate" Dean Ward (Sage also did his dad with average and biggest fish and Dean also doubled his son on points)

Hi thank you Craig for the outstanding report.

The Day started of terribly for me and Martin. Firstly we couldn’t find a ATM anywhere to to get some cash for the comp, in-addition to that: I forgot my wallet at home,(The worst isn’t over) just as we thought the bad luck is over , we followed the GPS’ all the way to Draaifontein “ chinamans ’ farm” all the way on the other side of the world!

After a lot of cursing and re-directing, we were on our way to the competition, we got there 20min late, but like they say rather late than never.
By 07h30 Martin had his first rod in, and not long after I got my two babies in the water.

Martin waited almost 45min for he’s first take “WHICH WAS a JUST-JUST” catch, he fought the heavy pounding grassie just to almost lose it on the bank, but none-the-less he had the first of many in the bag.

2hours in the competition I got my two-competition in a row blank came to an end with my first bite, just to lose the fish due to a bad “Knotless Knot”
It was just not our day!

After Martin has landed what seemed like a winning bag at first, I came through landing a not-so-bad grassie myself.

After a very slow day, and a lot of support from the wind coming from the back, Martin “CURSING” was getting insane distance with he’s mammoths of custom rods “More Cursing”

So took my P7, and I SAID to myself watch this space…..Casted like a mad chicken with mad cow disease, just to lose most of my pride and skin on my index finger “more cursing”

The comp came to and end what seemed like a very lazy day turned out to be an all smiles day for most anglers.

DIPS THAT WORKED:

Devils Fork + FX

Plain white dough

Distance: 80-120m

Hahahaha oh man, what a crazy day, from struggling to find a working ATM (got to love boksburg) to getting hopelessly lost, i really enjoyed it.

the casting machines you built for me Craig definately helped me out with the day, casting long distances, hitting my mark nearly everytime, im just going to get better and better. Im starting to get the feel for the rods, building on my confidence and i want to start challenging the 'big boys' of the club for top spot

Hows that finger of yours doing Anthony? Was something else watching someone cast with there middle finger lol

all in all, had a great day, with some good fish coming out. One thing i learnt for sure is play that grass carp like its your last one for the day, when they turn in the shallows, make sure your drag is not tight, really awsome fighting fish

Well done guys, I won't be angling the Pro Mania Classic, but will most probably be fishing the end of the month with Gauteng Pro Mania at the same venue, goiod sized fish.
