Sharkskin and I went up to Langebaan to target some Smoothhounds and whatever else would bite.
We arrived in Langebaan just after seven and while driving through town we noticed one of the tackle shops open (Not sure the name, but it's next to the pet store). What?? This early?? Sweet! So we ducked in and had a look around and picked up some mullet. As we had no experience with specifically targetting smoothhounds, we asked the guy working in the store about spots. He told us some spots in town but said we should try Spreeuwalle, and gave us directions. Awesome stuff! These langebaan people are pretty friendly! We also noticed on the door of the store, a number to call if you need bait after hours. again - What???? These guys up here are great!!
So we drove off to the Spreeuwalle parking lot to find security guards there to watch our car! Huh??? It just keeps getting better - these langebaan guys have got it jacked!
We loaded up for the walk over the dunes, and headed off with a very uncommon piece of mind that when we got back the car would be there, all windows intact. We walked over the dunes, down onto a beautiful piece of beach and decided on a spot on some rocks to tackle up. Water is looking nice, but for what, we don't know, but we both stick on mullet heads, wade out a bit and throw in.
Very shortly Kev gets a pull but then nothing. so we sit, and 15 minutes later he gets another pull. He lets it take him down and smacks it. The fish puts on a great fight, but a short while later Kev has it in the shore break and i tail it - a beautiful smoothhound of 142cm:
So the excitement levels are up as he rebaits, and I wait, but nothing for a while so reel in, mullet head gone. I rebait, but then it goes quiet for us for a while. Eventually my rod goes down and i run up and grab it. The fish is moving, and i just tighten onto it to get that circle in the corner and i am on! I remember thinking "Nah, this is bigger than Kev's it must be! It's so powerful!". So it strips line, and goes for a while, before I turn it and start gaining. I get it into the first channel and now we can see it on the surface splashing around. Awesome sight to watch these fish!! I finally get it into the shore break and Kev tails it! My first Smoothhound landed! Yeah!!! We measure it, and it comes to 141cm:
What great fun these fish are! Kev wins the smoothhound derby by 1 cm, but gets bonus points for taking a decent photo of my fish!
That was it for the action for the morning - more than enough for us
In general this was a really great fishing experience, from the fishing to the venue to the people - methinks I'll have to try this smoothhound thing again, and can't think of a better place than langebaan.
