Spooling Device

I was just wondering have any of you built a device to hold your reel and a spool of line while winding it on. I have ordered a spool of whiplash and now realise its going to be a mission to load the line on and off the reel under enough tension. If anyone has built one would you be willing to build me one? I would obviously cover costs of materials etc I am just not very good with DIY stuff so would probably end up with a useless pile of junk if I did it myself

This is what I use:

You will notice the two "Pyramid" shapes just above the rubber fits on both sides of the spool, you then put tension on it via the spring and lock it with the locknut at the top

Another pic, this time with a spool on it, the suction cup works great if you are only one person, I presume you can also clamp it in a vice if you like or do not have access to a suction cup.  Also I use it to put line  back onto a spool, simply put it in a drilling machine and Bob's your uncle

I have made one that clips on your rod infront of the real. Gave it to wp34 (Brian). Mabe he wil post a pic if he reads this tread.

This is the one sailfish made. 40mm plumbing pipe cut away to clip on your rod. Stainless bolt holding your spool.

This is mine. A bit of an overkill ,but, it was made within like halfhour. Timber,old rod butt section,galvanized bracket and some bolts and screws. The cones holding the spool is "plumbobs" any hardware store should have it. Drill a 10mm hole through it to allow for threadbar/bolt to go through. Linewinder is an optional extra!HAHA

I use 2 reels

the reel that will receive the line ... spool onto it first, as tight as you can, then transfer onto the "spare" reel as tight as you can, then set the drag on the spare reel at an acceptable level and then reel onto the reel you want the line on.

Takes longer but it works ...

I normally just drop my spool of line in a bucket of water.

Bucket of water and run the line through a telephone book or two. But I like the one that you clip on your rod.

Just bought 2 plastic spinning tops at a toy shop to use as the cones (R2.95 ea) Was at a loss what to use and Lucca ( Hooked) suggested the tops.

my spooling device was made by my in-laws almost 40 years ago... it has two hands that hold a pencil through the spool and its voice controlled... "hold it tighter" is all i have to say to increase tension.. or "let it go a bit" is what I say to lessen the tension on the spool..

however if I get too frustrated with progress and my voice commands sound to agrressive, then the device tends to cause the spool to recoil and hit me in the forehead..

Thought they might, so i put 2 greased fender washers on either side at the back of the tops....will have to see how it goes when I have to spool 700m of braid onto my new reel soon...lol

Lol can't wait to see the two hands when you try wind 1200meters of braid under tension!
