Spinning from surf

Some guys even use fly tackle and alvey reel I even encountered at Blakes. I'm multi oak but had fair success with grinders but prefer small abu/akios and spin rod setup.
Abu I'm using has 6.3/1 ratio ... at least printed so on side...what would make for most suitable... weight...retrieve rate... power ...casting ability.. can name some more factors...or is it a clear out win for grinder in this scenario .

:cool:If you throwing a S spoon and want to target ...say kob...a coffee is NOT the reel to use ...it imparts a non natural "twist" to the line...the S spoon will not "swim" with the correct wobble ...IF the kobbies are thick you may get lucky....BUT...when its tough and they are stubborn ..those very subtle changes in speed etc etc....ONLY a multiplier with at least a 6:1 ratio....so your Abu will do the job...a rod of about 10f range with a nice responsive tip and enough back bone to muscle the fish in and around the bricks will do the job...NOW...many will say that my set up is overkill...IE...SL30 with 12k line and I have a 10f Stimulator...BUT remember ...with alll the catch n release going on...you certainly doing that kobbie NO favours by "playing" him for hours on your light outfit....

Been doing this for the odd 20 years and STILL Im lookinf for the Holy Grail kobbie set up..hehe

For days you need distance with spin rod and lure.... working for me.... days leeries at back... you can reach them... you can catch them.

Small multilier (Akios or ABU) or my large low profile baitcaster (Tranx)

In terms of a fishing tool the large LP beats the small round reels.

:cool:Ja ..look...the coffee grinder or fixed spool reel , has made it easier for those that want to get out and do the odd bit of spinning here n there AND with the advent of these reels being so advanced in technology etc etc AND many fisherman dont have the time or patience to have to master a multiplier as in the casting and overwinds etc etc....Throwing spoon/lure with a multiplier takes practise and time put in ...BUT there is nothing better than being able to throw for hours on end without any overwinds AND still possibly hook and land a fish....

I remember years ago standing at shark point in Mazzeppa and had been throwing plug for leeries for about 2 hours and decided to stop and the ole man Malcolm Botha looks over at me...what now??..youve only just started ...the leeries are coming...I then got up and started throwing again...after about another solid hour the ole toppie goes ON!!...for the next hour or so we got into the leeries...enuff said...

;)Another absolute MYTH about throwing spoon for kob ..is the low n slow retrieve ...absolute nonsense...AND that the only real areas to terget kob on spoon is over sandy banks , beaches with sloepies out back OR where the water is churning sand....NOW ,,whilst a kob is lazy and more of an ambush predator ...he certainly is NOT weak...a pretty strong swimmer and when he uses his tail it engages propulsion immediatly ...unlike ..say a shad who will cavitate or wheel spin in one spot before he gets going....Sooo..with this in mind ...throwing spoon in and around bricky areas and where there are deep gutter inbetween channels with essentially a rocky bottom whose structure does not alter too much ...is where you would probably find the most success...working white water that is clean and clear and in that last dark before first light ...is your optimum time....NOW ..to find out the right water temp...tide and baro pressure for your spot/area and you in business!!!
