I use to often catch them on a very precisely presented drift bait. Here's the trick. Check when the guys spoon for them. Very often and in most cases the Snoek chase the spoons then the guys spooning run out of water? In other words the Snoek makes a last minute attempt at the spoon literally when the spoon is lifted out the water. This is when you have that perfect Red-eye or Sard presentation. No skirt or any other fancy device to add color. Just flick that fillet with a bit of timing involved, let it sink, wind in fairly slowly and now and then give the rod tip a slight twitch. My little 4 inch Scarborough worked perfectly for this. A rod that you would use for Bass is plenty of fun with them.
Sometimes there is another Snoek accompanying the hooked one, feeding on the remaining bait dangling from the others mouth. If you have no wire then iether or of the fish will bite you off. Sometimes they go for the Swivel attached to the wire if it's a bit shiny. Just be warned the pick up is sudden and with power. So be ready.You don't need a wire trace when spooning for them.
You can also give the Beachwood Golf course beach heading towards Umgeni North Bank a go as well. If they are around you will get a fish or two. Accident Pipe , just North of Toti is another Spot. Umdloti is another spot. Sheffield area also produces them.
