duckbill, they certainly do work for leeries. Shiny topwater lures or diving Rapalas work very well, as do softbaits such as the Berkley or Storm. I have had excellent results in the Goukou estuary on the Storm pearly white. Only problem is, elf is usually also around then and they really hammer your softbaits.

Top water is by far the most exciting way to catch leeries, especially when the bigger fish about. Genrally make my own plugs for leeries as you can experiment nicely with size, weight, hooks etc. You should be able to cast even fairly light plugs, 1/2oz up to 50 or 60m with well balance tackle. Fireline helps as does the rod and reel combination that you use. Good tip is to try and use the wind when you cast, this not necessarily meaning that you through downwind but that you can really use the wind to keep your plug on the surface giving it the most lifelike action.
My expereince is that leeries tend to take a little more aggressively when the plug skipping better and not ploughing through the water.

I Have a question as I understand that down in the Eastern Cape you guys pick up Garrick in the estuaries all year round. Now with the sardine run (Hopefully) on its way the Garrick are supposed to follow the sards up to the Natal Coast. Is it possible to pick up Garrick off the beach in Natal with Light Tackle, considering how far one might have to cast or will they venture close in over rocky areas. I do understand that they feed in the surf zone but still that can be quite far out to cast with a 7' rod and light tackle.
Any tips for the Natal Coast?

You will be surprised as to the distance that you can get with a 7ft rod and a small plug. I caught any number of fish this year off of the surf with my outfit, especially around river mouths. Here in the Southern Cape we had huge rains at the end of November that really opened up all of our river mouths. Had great success on the sea side of the Goukama River mouth aswell as the Great Brak river mouth. The average size of fish in these areas being 2-4kg with a few around 6kg. A mate of mine got the one below at Great Brak river mouth.

Grunterrr, check out the thread on http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=7083&forum_id=10. There's a homemade bucktail spoon that I have made for leeries but hav not yet tried. So we were thinking along the same lines. There's also a plug made from winecorcks that I have managed to pick up leeries on.
