Hey piranha ....dont no if the other guys wil agree wit me but this is wat i think would make a good beginner combo....a 7ft sensation passion stick(i fish with one and its awesome ! Beautiful fast action rod tht throws up to a 1ounce jig) and i'd match tht rod wit maybe a shimano slade 2500 or 2000(if it does come in a 2000? Not sure) for balancing reasons and budget reasons....there are much cheaper combinations but this is my opinion :)

That would be a great combo, you don't need the most expensive equipment to fish.

in the rod department there are cheaper rods that are perfectly capable. I have 2 Elbe rods, about 250 each, love them. 1 a 1pc and the other a 2pc

this is my dilema...
ive got a scimitar 6'6 rod and a slade with 6lbs fireline...
ive got R1200 to spend... i either want to get a new rod ( im thinking berkley 7'tactix )or a new reel ( im thinking the excellor )
which is the better investment.... rod or reel....

personally i'm leaning torwards the rod.( i've never had a problem with the slade). for me dropshot fishing is about having a good fight ... i fish vidal mostly and moonies and small kingies provide me with hours fun... ive heard the berkley tactix still allows for the smaller fish to bend the rod, but has the backbone for the bigger fish... i've seen bus kingies swimming along the ledges and dont think my 6'6 would handle it... if anyone's at vidal begining of dec, i'll be there, so let me know if u keen to wet a line...

Berkley air rod - I think about 1200-1500
Sensation Passion Stick 8ft - about R 500

Never touched the Berkley rods, but have heard good things about them

Have the Passion Stick, rated up to 1.5oz, haven't caught anything on it yet, but it's a nice rod.

Once you've paid the rod off it's time to start saving for a Daiwa Oceano 4500 and some 20lb braid

I've got the Tactix 7ft with the Excellor 3000, perfectly balanced and an awesome combo !

The Tactix has got GREAT backbone, yet also soft enough to feel every tap !

Nothing wrong with the Passion sticks though ! Definate value for money !

Cant coment on the Slade, but can definately say that the excellor is bloody awesome !!! got some nice wave garrick and blacktails on it, good drag, and altogether very smooth. Been dunked in Saltwater a couple of times !

Hows the excellor rods? are they any good?

Ianzo,

I also looked at the Excellor rods, but I felt that it was just a bit too light at the tip, I chose the Berkley.

A mate of mine has the Excellor, and he loves it, so I guess different strokes. Have a feel of a couple of rods, and settle for the one you feel more comfortable with.

Also, have a look at the Tica rods, also felt Very Very Nice !
