Spearing Glentana / Vic Bay Area this December

Hi everyone!

I'm going to be spending the holiday from the 18th of December to the 4th of January in Hersham near Glentana and I'm looking to do some ( a lot of) spearing while I'm down there.

I've done a lot of shore diving along the South Coast and the Transkei but I'm completely green when it comes to diving that area. I've managed to get some advice from a few guys on spots to dive but first place would be to hook up with someone down there - local knowledge is always best (plus I'm wary of the men in white / grey suits.)

So, if anyone has any advice on diving around Vic Bay , Sedgefield, Glentana, Mosselbay etc. or if any divers are down there and looking for a tag along, please get in touch! It'll be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!
PJ

Vic Bay, walk past the houses on the water front and jump in on the point – needs to be flat, swim to the right as far as you like. Good Cracker this time of year – all up against the side.

Be sure not to make a pig of yourself on the Cracker, locals at Vic Bay get very grumpy.

Harold’s Bay also good for a shore dive, as is Gerrikes Point.

Mossell Bay point also very good, however leave your weight belt at home and use your Titanium Balls for weights. It’s a great white hot spot but full of big cracker. Guys do dive it though.

Hi.

Glentana can be very difficult to dive due to the conditions there, currents swell etc. If you staying in Hersham, your best bets would be tergniet, reebok area, can get some huge fish there, cracker , belman, cob, steenies and some goen bronzebream, but right now cracker and cob is going to be around those ledges and reef. There is a "marine drive" along tergniet and reebok, you can pick your spots from the road. Just off the ledges. Kleinbrak and hartenbos reefs would be the next best with the same species. Yea, it is packed with the locals in grey suits but never really have incidents there.

Thanks Grootvis and Sparrabos! Managed a dive yesterday afternoon around Mosselbay Point. What an epic spot! Had really good vis and conditions were pretty good. I managed to get two size Romans which wasn't bad for a short time in the water. Tried to go out again this morning early but the wind and rain and general gloominess sent me back to bed. Once the weather improves I'll definitely head to Vic Bay. Will let you guys know how it goes!

Thanks for all the info! Much appreciated. And if anyone's keen for a dive, let me know!

Hey everyone!

Just some quick feedback on our trip and the diving.

Thanks firstly for all the awesome advice about the diving that you guys sent through. I really appreciate it and it helped a lot!

I ended up diving Mossel Bay point a lot, The reef running out near Santos beach in Mosselbay and Vic Bay a few times too. All in all epic diving!

I think I was really lucky with the conditions in general and only had a couple of days with crappy vis. The diving around the point at Mosselbay was awesome and I was lucky with 3 days where I'm sure the vis was around 12 - 16m. I managed a few nice Romans, Saw a MONSTER cracker which I spooked, messed up on a nice Yellow belly and had to bite on my lip everytime I saw another fat Galjoen teasing me! I didn't see too many cracker about but I heard a few. Admittedly one is a bit on edge when diving there, especially a bit further out and I had a few big scares with seals and big rays swimming right past me and making me yelp a bit. A definite highlight was being completely surrounded by about 7 big Raggies. I forgot about spearing and spent about half an hour just freediving and cruising around with them! I was also pleasantly surprised by the big schools of big rays swimming around there!

The diving around Vic Bay (once you elbowed your way into the water through the crowds) was magical! Although I didn't see as much fish in that area I did manage a few nice Hotties and a bronze bream for the braai. The structure and Vis was incredible! I actually think the water was a bit too quiet and flat while I was diving there - even though I was diving right up against the bricks in the white water - I only briefly saw one small cracker and then just some more Galjoen, Hotties and Bronzies. But, even though I've dived all over Moz, Sodwana, The South coast and abroad, this was certainly some of the most magical and unique diving I've ever done. With good vis and calm water, the structure and scenes you come across are spectacular! I can't wait to go back.

So, thanks for all the advice and recommendations! I didn't get a chance to swim out to Windvogel (will have my fishing ski there next time) and I didn't make it to Gerricke's point (also next time) but I had an awesome holiday diving, saw some beautiful stuff, shot enough fish for the braai and had an awesome time!

Anton, sorry we didn't get a chance to hook up - only got your message once I was back in the flatlands.

Next up, Sodwana missions while the water is warm and the gamefish are around!

Lekker!
PJ

Haha Thanks Jakes! Nothing big but hey, as long as I don't have to do an empty handed walk of shame up the beach I'm happy. Thanks, will PM you when I make a mission down that side again - I'm back up in Gauteng in the salt mines but I'll be back for a dive sometime soon. Maybe April. Lekker!
