SPEARGUN LENGTH

Hi guys,

I'm new to spearfishing and I'm looking to buy a new/second hand speargun. What lenght of speargun should I be looking at? I will mainly hunt from shore in water that is not that deep.

Any advice is welcome!

Hi Magtellus,

I would recommend either a 90cm barrel, or a 1m to start with.  I hunt a lot in the kelp for bigger fish, and a 1m is adequate, provided you put a good strong set up rubbers on.  If you start diving more open water then you can consider a 1.1m, and 1.2 or even 1.3 if you dive Struis or others.  A 09 is nice to handle, but if the water is clean and you find some big fish it might not be enough.

But in Cape Town I still use 1m and 1.1 for hunting tail off a boat, so that 1m can be a nice utility gun.  Living in Stellies, I guess you will be diving Hangklip and beyond?

Guys, any other opinions?

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Magtellus

Jensent is correct on the 90cm barrel length.

Its short enough for skratching in the kelp and has enough distance to take long range shots at  reef and kelp fish. When you move out into deeper water its a good entry level gun for yellowtail. Also a gun that is used on the reef area takes alot of punishment.

What I like about the 90 is that you can use both 16mm and 20mm rubbers on it.

Everything above is spot on.

Also the 90 is nice as you will invariably have some surge in shallower water and the 90 is more manouverable.

Safe Diving.
