spearfishing masks?

As the topic suggests I would like to hear from all our spearo's here which masks they use and which ones they rate and why they like them.

I just myself a pair of Scubapro CrystalVu's as they were missed priced in the store. I haven't tried them yet but I like the fact that I still retain my peripheral vision with them, any thoughts?

Looking forward to your comments and suggestions.

Hi Johan,

As a beginner any mask that suits your pocket and fits comfortably without leaking is first prize. As you progress and start diving past 10m you may need to look into a low volume mask which unfortunately most of do not have the peripheral vision.

Hi,

Not sure what you paid, but that would be considered a high volume mask.Nothing wrong until you get to diving deeper depths where the mask "squeeze" will become a factor.I started with a R70 mask from Makro and used it for many years before I actually lost it and then replaced it with a lower volume spearo mask and have since been through at least another six or seven in five years or so.Neptune probably has a big discount dive store somewhere ................

What did you pay? Difficult to see on the image, but it looks like the mask might be curved. This tends to lead to distortion. I'm not sure what price range you're shopping in, but Louis is currently running a special on a pair of Omer fins with mask and snorkel included for about R2k. I use an Omer Olympia myself. Fits on my face. It's supposed to be middle of the range. Remember that your comfort is all that's important, so you might find a R200 mask that is perfect for your purposes.

Hi Johan,

I'm still quite green when it comes to diving (Especially spearing). I was given a mask that a friend used for scuba. Having said that, I absolutely love it! I'll check out what it is. On the other hand, I've heard good things of the Reef Inferno, I have one as a backup, but haven't given it a good go yet.
Cheers,
L

I use a Technisub Micro Mask with a black skirt.

The lenses are very close to your eyes and it has a very low volume. This allows for a wide peripheral view without mask squeeze on deep dives.

The best mask I have dived with, but is quite pricey at R900

Personally I think the one thing you have to make sure is that you use a mask with a black skirt. With the clear skirt, you have too much light come into the mask and then you miss seeing fish in dirtier water. The reflecting light can also hurt your eyes after a while. That of course that it sits comfortably and seals properly... :)

I also recently replaced a mask but didn't decide on anything until Louis (Rabitech) made me try on at least 8 different masks.

Eventually settled for a Mares LiquidSkin low volume mask and must say it is by far the most comfortable mask I have ever owned.

As indicated fit and comfort is the most important thing - so try on a few before you make up your mind as an uncomfortable or leaking mask WILL ruin any dive.

Also remember to buff out the oily film on the lenses with toothpaste before using it else the mask will fog up when you dive.

For the price, the masks that Rabitech have bought out are very comfy. I have used mine on a dive to 20m with no hassel, I do however usually use a pair of Cressi Super Occio's, they were given to me by my diving buddy and mentor and in my opinion they work like a charm.

The cressi super occio is legendary and have been used by plenty of spearos, scubas and  underwaterhockey players over the years.

The design have been copied by numerous manufacturers and remade under their own name.  I personally owned 2 super occios and 3 omer abyss which is one of those copies.

My only gripe with this mask is the limited peripheral view...

I have the Mares Star Elite. It works perfectly. Its a good low volume mask with the added feature of 'one way' lenses, so you don't spook the fish when you make eye contact. You can get the mask from any Mares stockist for about R550 - R600

Hey?
I had a look at my mask, and I see that it is a "H. Dessault" ultra low volume. They appear to have a mirrored film on, just like Gromit described. The fish won't be able to see my eyes for sure!
I have no idea how much they cost, but they are comfortable and never fog up when I spit in them. Good luck on making your choice Johan!

Hi There ,

Just my 2 cents , the mask in my opinion is the most important piece of equipment and i would suggest time is taken in selecting the correct one , great low volume masks that are well priced are the Omer Aliens as well as the reef inferno's

i have the omer alien.i love it ,its very soft and comfortable. they manufactured it with strap attached to the silicone skirt and not the frame. it allows wider view for a low volume. its disadvantage is ,that it can tear easier,so dont stick it in your fins foot pocket.

The oceanic shadow is what I use it is a rimless, single lens, low volume mask, with excellent vision.

I started with a occio, but it hurts the bottom of my nose on long days in the water.

Reef had a teardrop shaped mask that I loved, but the mask wore through, from use.

Get a mask that fits your face and seals easily.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

I ended up staying with my mask (Scubapro Crystal Vu) as it was a great fit the moment I put it on.

Used it this weekend and both times we were in the water for almost one and a half hours and I had no problems with it, no leaking, didn't hurt anywhere and my view was great, except for the crappy weather conditions :p.
