Speared my first decent fish!

A Spotted Grunter +- 52 cm - possibly pushing 2KG (did not have access to a scale). I am stoked!

Still using an old gun and plan to buy a new one but it worked just fine for this shot.

Was in the Van Staadens River mouth in the Eastern Cape. Some nice fish there, i was surprised at what i found including nice Leervis etc

Are you even allowed to spear in tidal or closed rivers?

Minimum size for Blacktail is 20cm by the way!

Relax - the black tail was found by a 5 year old in the water dead already. He was chuffed he had also caught a fish though.

The river mouth was open, i was not aware that you are not supposed to spear there? There is nothing on my spearfishing licence that mentions where or where i can/cannot spear. Enlighten me please... Plenty fishermen around the place.

I'm chilled as can be bud.

Just posing a question.... sure some of the more experienced spearos would be able to shed some light on the subject.

And trying to educate. You did post a photo of your catch and there was a tiny (dead looking) black tail next to it.

PS: Nice Grunter by the way!:fbash

no problem, i appreciate the input. I have done some research now and it does not seem like one is allowed to spearfish in Lagoons, tidal pools etc so you are quite correct.... We live and learn from our mistakes!

I was most dissapointed this December, i spent many hours in the water, around the PE bay (6 pillers etc), Schoenies around the Marine and did not come accross a fish bigger than probably 20cm (besides Mullet - which i dont feel count). Where have all the bigger fish gone, or where can one find a decent catch in a legal area?

Looking to pickup all that i can on this forum

Mattayou, well done on your first fish.Grunter is really good eating!

I know you have dived numerous times without seeing big fish.Shooting fish isn't just the case of jumping in the water and they swim up to you so that you can shoot them. Most of the time it is hard work, either waiting on the bottom in some crevice till you are blue in the face,or getting smashed into rocks waiting for the Garrick/Leeries to swim past.I usually get fish most times I go but I know my area well and when to dive it.

There are still good fish to be had but it takes time and knowledge of the area and which fish are in season eg.Garrick - winter time (May-Nov) KZN South Coast.

Join a club or start diving with someone better than you, that always helps a lot.

Good luck, spearing is a serious addiction to me.
