South Pear Action

Our Club's top anglers were challenged by some of the tackle suppliers for a friendly dropshot outing of south pear, Richards Bay, yesterday. Boy, if only I had heavy tackle, got smashed by 2 huge fish below and another 2 on top. I only had 4kg mono and paid the ultimate price. Landed only one rock cod. Charles managed to land a couple of smaller fish such as moonies, blacktail, blaktip kingfish and rock cod. Zoemdoef (Leon) was the only bloke with 20lb kingfisher bonded braid. Ge got a sml blacktip kingfish, Travely, and these two monsters as shown below. He himself got smashed up several times by big blokes down below. Our competitors landed none.

The fish is a speckled snapper and a Rock Salmon

Absolutely great fish - too bad you were fishing that light though.

To qualify for "dropshot" according to Sealine, you need to use a breaking strain of 8lb or less.  Silly really...

What makes braid great for dropshot/artificials is the ability to feel exactly what's happening on the other side of the line.  The only problem is abrasion resistance.

I have caught nice big Dorado en Queenfish on 8lbs fire line. You can pull as hard as you want on 8lbs fire line that line is strong.

For me it goes about enjoying every oppertunaty I go fishing and losing fish because my line is to light nope dont like that at all. So its 8 or 10 lbs fire line with 30 lbs floro carbon leader for all my light art lure fishing...

Dont know about max 8lbs to qualify as "dropshot"....

Sorry, just checked and it is max 7kg/16lb line.  At least, that's the rule to qualify for the dropshot category of the Sealine record catch database:

[*]For our purposes, "DROPSHOT" will be defined as, angling using:
ROD LENGTH less than 8 ft
LINE STRENGTH less than 7Kg/16lb
PLASTIC LURES and NOT bait.

So what to do now?

Fireline is rated on knot break strength while kingfisher line is rated on straight breaking strength.

so as an example:

20lb fireline is equal to about 30lb kingfisher line

Please will someone with the correct info regarding this matter comment on this?

:?:?:?

I second that we can't have Fireline and regular braid in the same category when the criteria for rating the breaking strain is not the same.

Can we please get an official answer:sf:::

Hey guy's. The Rock Salmon (River snapper) was caught on a Effzett Power v-tail minnow (Grey Glitter colour) and the speckled snapper was caught on a Ecogear Power shad 3" (Moonlight glow Colour).

Rods, give me a buzz when you are gonna come to Richards Bay and I'll show you what we used and where.

Regarding the 16lb theory, as far as I know there is no such thing. Wesley Rapson, Hennie Papenfuss and ESA dropshot with up to 40lb fireline (which equals to 55lb standard braid). I also saw them using up to 10ft rods at times. So this will mean that all those lovely fish you saw caught on tv was illegal to dropshot and shouldn't count???

I don't know, I love to fish with 5lb mono, but if I wanna fish with 20lb, 40lb, 50lb or even 80lb then I will. The fact remains that I used a single plastic bait instead of real bait and was working the dropshot while twitching the rod in my hand (ea, not just trolling behind the boat like some blokes do). To me that qualifies as dropshot.

If I'm not mistaken the regulations quoted by jaccil are specific to Sealine.

Well I think that it is truely unfair to our fellow dropshot anglers. Surely they must try and change this rule to fit all anglers.:(

Guys this is merely the regulations for the Sealine Record Catch Database, There is no need to redefine dropshot. In fact some time ago Sealine tried to move away totally from the word dropshot and named the thread Saltwater Lure Angling and then added dropshot under that, to keep the so called dropshotters happy. It seem you guys are getting your nikkas in a knot for no reason.

my 2c worth ( if that )
