so like most of you i read the SA poeier thread and am not convinced that sa poier is the end all and be all...
we went to Nirvana again and because it is not the most fished waters in the vaal system you really need a sa poeier concept to get the fish there...
I made the sa poeier and tried it with the first couple of throws.. only at 10 am did we get the first fish a barbel .. a couple more on mielies then the first carp arrived ...
small ones.. 1-2 kilo...
i tried sweet flavours and it went slow...
i was also trying a new trace and it seemed to work well .. small dihaci hooks and one floatie... all the stuff they sell us in the books... B*$#Hit.. because .. i had a reel run and hooked into a big boi.. bout 10meters out it came off the hook.. i lost another later... same way.. hook must not have set good and was probably so thin it toar through its lip...
so i thought .. bugger this, lets do what i am comfy with .. used a rietvlei .. with nice sized vdm hooks and used some almond tcp mielies with a dough backing.. and sent it out as far as i could ..
had my late morning nap and my alarm went off.. and it was a nice one(see pic).. when i landed it i was glad to see this hook gone trough bottom lip twice and top lip once.. fishing improved as the day went on and i did not loose one after that..
now that is a trace and hook combo i can live with not these hooks you can catch a guppy with ..
so in summary... stick to what you are comfy with .. big fish want something to bite into .. not large, just bite size.. for a 8 kilo.. ,,,, sa poier is busted cus i fished virgin waters and only after changing to strong flavours did the fish pitch for the parti..
