Some Reel issues....

So I had RE 6000 for a year or so.. I thought the way the reel reeled the line was normal.. After speaking to some guys i realised this is a "flaw" in the reel where at the top and bottom of the spool it winds a gap.. this gap causes line to get stuck and when you cast causes it to resist line comming off and thus affect your casting distance..

so why the hell do you sell a reel for 700bucs when you know there is a flaw in it..

responses i got was that they (Shimano) know about this and that these reels are intended for the UK where they use thicker line.. this was what the guys at Western Accesories told me .. claim that i should have been informed of this when i bought the reels.. I was not!!!! .. Humph.. well if that is the case then dont sell them here..

one fix i was told is to wind thick line on the reel and then wind the 300 m thin line on the top.. this did not help either..

If anyone knows a Shimano rep or expert i would like to know what the hell the story is.. as you can tell i am not chuffed with this as you expect quality from such a brand as shimano..

I was thinking of getting the GTE8000 but think i have lost my faith in Shimano besides.. it might be a waste if this happens again..

Can anyone tell me what baitrunner reel in the market does not do this ... I am in the market for reels in the R500-1000 range.. but if a set of R250 does the trick then clearly quality does not have to come at a price..

Thanks

Gertus I have read in a post somewhere on SL the this can happen when your spool is not clipped in properly not sure if this is the case?

Hi Gertus,

I don't think you should lose your faith in Shimano so quickly because of this "flaw". Reels are designed for specific applications and if the reel you have was meant to be fished with thicker line then the logical outcome is that you are going to have problems when using thinner line which was never meant to be spooled onto the reel. It is a pity that you were not informed of this when you purchased the reels and could not make an informed decision at the time.

From personal experience I have had absolutely no problems with my Shimanos, I have both the 6000 GTE-B and XTE-A reels and cast the k#k out of both of them. I am extremely happy with them and will not change them for anything else!

If I were you I would look into the GTE-C range as I see they retail for around R950 at the moment.

Just my 2c

LATEST UPDATE... So my Shimano saga continues.. I baught myself two brand spanking new GTE-C's in feb... and noticed some weird action when winding on the new line.  The spool on one reel did not make the full up and down  cycle.. at first i thought this was just a NEW wadvanced feature... line did not wind perfect but i left it as is..

went feeshing about 3 weeks ago and on the 4 retrive noticed serious problems as the reel failed to cycle the spool up and down hence reeling line in one secion on the spool.. next week i took it to western accesories for a replacement... "no" they said .. "we dont replace we repair" ok i thought and sent it to be repaired.. Sat i went to collect the repaired reel and was asked to pay R60 for the repair..

Hell no .. I refused to pay.. she started to say something about it being outa warentee.. she said the warentee is 3months on the reel wich i found hard to belive.. .. I explained that i purchased it only a month ago... Oh she said.. well then we will chat to shimano service agent.. he said... i eventually left without paying but was greatly concerned for two reasons..

The fact that she said it was only in warentee for 3months.. and the fact that even in warentee i still had to pay.. I called the shimano servce chap who was most helpful to explain this to me .. they did not state that the reel was purchased only a month ago but he also said there is a year warentee on these reels.. the problem is the inception of the warentee... and the failure to inform the client of this ..

Does the warentee start from the day Western Acc buyes the reel from Shimano or from the day you buy it from them. (WA) i would think the latter.. so there you have it my friends these are facts and you decide for yourself..

I understand the Shimano Japan frreaks are in SA in two weeks .. maybe they can sort this out..  i am serioulsly loosing all confidence in shimano reels and thinking a WAFT or even my old ORLANDO's  might be a better option.. Fanks.

ps. to be fair they (WA) did give me a loan reel (piece of crap) while mine was repaired.

You wont make a mistake if you go for a Waft reel. And I agree if you pay for quality and get somthing less demand your money back.

hair .. out .. head... you know what busg me the most.. there is not one place where the salesman/lady can with confidence tell me this or that reel is the best.. i just cant belive someone who has never cast with a rod to tell me .. this one is the best cuz of this .. that .. or the other reason.. because they themselves fish and use these reels or rods.. cuz they dont.. this pisses me off.. no one who sells these things have a cooking clue.. what to tell the customers ... where can one find a shop where the guy behind the counter knows (from experince) what is best and can advise you on the best setup..
Mias and WE is like builders warehouse.... the biggest and the most variety.. but the 18year od behind the counter has never held a drill in his whole life..

Go to Johan Keet's shop in Commissoner str, Boksburg. This guy is a Springbok and provincial angler. A genuine gentleman who will point out pro's and con's when you ask him abt it. He even convinced me to buy a different product than what I wanted, which turned out to be the better option. He has a small shop and you will struggle to beat his prices as well.

@Gertus

Shows you how much the WA lot know about the products they sell.

This is not a common problem with shimano but as the spools are mass machined and each spool is not custom fitted to each reel there are sometimes fitting problems

I have 12 shimano baitrunners and 32 spools and most fit first time without tapered line lay. The last spool to give me this problem was on a R2400 XTEA 10,000

Some sometimes taper to the top while others taper to the bottom. To remedy the problem:

Under the top cap on the spool where the spool clip is there are 3 spacing washers and a split pin.

When your line tapers to the top, reposition the washers below the split pin

When your line tapers to the bottom then shift the washers above the split pin

If this fails then contact me about getting some Awa-Shima Karpista bait runners with a 3 year suppliers guarrantee.

If it doesn't make sense I'll post a few pics

At what price do they retail Enigma? I wanted to get me a shimano 4000DL, but heard that there are ALOT of comebacks and complaints about shimano's low budget reels.

@Enigma..
As always very good advice...
I have tried the spacers thing.. moved it up and down to see what it does .. and found it only moves the centre point up or down .. this means it either winds line perfectly at the bottome and then have a gap at the top or visa versa.. my issue is going completely to the top and completely to the bottom in one cycle..
lets have a look at the wafts.. if they are the same price as the shimanos i will sell the GTEs and get a pair of wafts..
as i said.. im not here to whyne.. i just want the best combo for me..
