So the JMAG cast control system, aka monomag has been evolving constantly. It has gone to the smallest possible set up now. Nothing stagnates at Jonathans Reel Repairs and Upgrades. Compare the steps of progress from original UK one I fixed to my satisfaction to the very latest version where only 3mm stand out from the side plate. Only the adjustment knob now shows.
This one was fitted by enigma supplied by black dog tackle.

I ended up with this now the smallest possible way for an adjustable monomag cast control set up, all JMAG conversions will be fitted this way now due to clients requests. These I did for my buddy Ebs here.

That does look good ne. Well done and also very clean work with the clicker still intact. I enjoy seeing your work, you can see you really love what you do.

Just out the workshop now. Doing some reels for the A Nationals at struisbaai. About 2,5 to 3 turns to total free spool, I prefer this for fishing it permits more and finer adjustment so you have a wider range to work with. For the tournament guys a single turn on a quick take thread is desirable, but it goes from zero to boom in a flash 1 turn.

They want this but for fishing we want more adjustment and finer tuning so I will keep the slower adjustment. Hope this answers your question, thanks for asking.

Is the corrosion between the knobby and the reel normal?

When there is a lack of grease on the threads or in between the two different metals this happens.

Periodic oiling and wiping off the excess prevents this.

Correct Reel maintenance prevents this too.

It's not normal - That is lack of maintenance right there,

or perhaps superglue

100% correct...Its salt crystalising under what seems 2b a rubber seal of sorts..definatly a maintance thing...Wash with soapy water after each use....:);)

Hi All, i have only seen this post comments now. that was a reel i got from pretoria craig neil fitted that original knobby one.

That is called galvanic corrosion it has little to do with non maintenance. Different metals will react with salt water especially so with stainless and aluminium, that is a given.

Now you understand why i have that black bush machined on all my original ones fitted. It prevents this from happening.

With the current smaller version that stainless sleeve part outside i no longer fit and there is no chance of that happening. like all good things it just got better and smaller. Another pic is attached to show what i mean. Thanks
