I was up for some fishing lessons with the fishing legend and guru Herklaas AKA Moz toppie. I was and is still in the market for a good fishing kayak and tried to launch with a stealth Supalite X which I wanted the purchase, but the kayak’s leg set-up was way too short for my length and all I manage to get was a good pounding by the waves without being able to paddle and get through the surf on it. I then got onto a Panicle kayak that Herklaas brought with which I manage to punch through the surf and got two small cutas on Wednesday. What a great fishing kayak this was. The speed and maneuverability of this ski is phenomenal. I enjoyed every aspect of this kayak. But I still have a huge lot to learn and practice as beaching it was a disaster (all my fault of cause) While waiting for a wave to ride out on I was too far into the surf and a wave picked me up and tipped the kayak over (and Moz toppie laughing away at the back). The result was a long swim back to the beach for me, but I did not feel that bad when I turned around and saw the Moz toppie was in the water as well.

Well on Friday the launch went much better with only about four rollovers in the surf before I manage to build up momentum to punch though the surf. Moz toppie got on like a pro and paddled though in one go. Well things did not get better for me that day as the first cuta I hooked up was a decent size fish and as I gaffed it and put the rod back into the rod holder the fish pulled me overboard and I landed up in the drink. I flipped the kayak back right side up, got back onto the kayak and pulled the rod back on the rod strap. Only then I discovered that the fish was still on and the gaff still in it’s back.Well I manage to land the fish and dry out the hatch, which had a little water in it by now. Here is the fish that almost took me down.

Moz toppie showed how it was done by landing a cuta much bigger than mine on Friday. Here we are with a successful days fishing.

All the fish were caught using small mackerel as bait, we did try Jap mackerel on the first day without managing a single strike on then.

This was an awesome trip to Mozambique and I will most definitely be back as soon as I have purchased my own Panicle kayak. I would like to thank Moz toppie for all his help and patience and Malboer for the use of the equipment. You guys have made a kayak fisherman out of me now and although I still would still love to get the odd GT from the surf now and then, the kayak will be my main mode of fishing from now on.

Hi Gert

Thank you for your persistence after 12 tumbles on the launch and the willingness to take advice.
Went better on the Pinnacle though
You were a great fishing buddy!
This is why you will enjoy kayak fishing and your place is booked for life with us in Moz.
On ski fishing every day is a different challenge which make it such a interesting venture.

From Malboer and Myself hope we see you soon in Moz for a Mili trip.

Hi GT

Was die naweek terug by Techo om bietjie by Neels te gaan kuier en Natuurlik n launch ingekry.

Wat 'n Disaster;

Groete

More oom Herklaas

Daai Kawa-Kawa is n baie goeie bait ……….. as jy wil haai vang hahahahaha.:ssswim:

Maar as die Pro so gesukkel het so ek defnitief my agterwereld gesien het:cens.

Groete
Gert

Daai klein pienk/blou/pers Halco was die eerste slag offer. Daarna my faitfull pers Halco.
Dusters Pink/pearl Pers/pearl Rooi/pearl groen/pearl en net pearl.
