So for some 10 years+ I have been rock and surf angling and here's what i learnt.

Unless you go fishing with someone who has successfully come home with caught not bought fish you are gonna take years of trial and error to catch anything significant. To date my exploits have been from Saldanha to Struisbaai and Port Shepstone with the latter at the hand of a local delivering 4 large Shad as they call it, Elf as we do.

I have caught a few edibles but not even tallying 15 in my angling exploits of 10yrs+.

Cost to date let see : S/S prawn pump,tube,2x Snowbee waders, 4x reels viz. Penn49A, Penn 500 Jigmaster, Penn 555 and a Daiwa SL50SH, 3 rods viz. Javis Walker 3pce a.k.a. Flippy (turned out to be a rvier rod but hauled in the big bronzie as well as my Elf and a Gallie), Purglass Stoke5 custom (green) 1pce and Blue Marlin G3 5pce. 1000's of metres of Maxima line of different colours and strenths, tons of sinkers being of grab and bottle varieties. Hooks a plenty and swivels to boot. Tackle boxes, head lamps cutting boards, knives, scissors, floats cotton, gaff rod holders... Did I leave anything off for qualifying as a well prepared fisherman except maybe a 4x4 (which was on the cards until the law changed regarding riding on the beach in 2002/2003 and after loads of phone calls and emails to Overberg municipality etc for permission)

Chuck in the accomodation and food and booze costs for fishing weekends to Arniston and struisbaai which is a 400km return drive from where I live which tallied 5 to 6 per year for 4 yrs straight.

I have fished Langebaan ,Saldanha, Camps Bay, Kommetjie,Scarborough,Millers point or Smitswinkel baai (whatever it's called) Fish Hoek, Sunny Cove, Baileys Cottage,Muizenberg,Sonwabi,Broken road,Muskiet Gat,Arendse Road Middelbank, Die Pyp,Beespens,Mnandi,Monwabisi (off the rocks and in the bay) Boskloof,Rooi Els, Pringle Bay,Palmiet,Dawidskraal,Hermanus in the harbour and surrounds,Die Dam,All over Arniston up to Die Draad and Strauisbaai.

So if we put a tally on costs I would say well over R15k has been spent for 15 edibles at most.

What have I learnt??? If you don't know what the hell you doing or if you are listening to people who also have no clue what they are doing then you on a fool's expedition.

Solution: Research.

Not buying hords of books written by people who speak of experience but yet not a single picture of them with a fish???? Hell I even bought a handwritten book which was very informative but not enough to land me dick squat.

The research I have compiled only amounts to 18 pages but it goes into practice this weekend and I will keep a detailed record for 1 year. Should I not catch any edibles totalling 15+ Iwill hang up my rock and surf angling equipment and donate it to someone and stick to my boat fishing where I have been much more successful.

I feel for you! Equipment is expensive but one can't put a prise on relaxation? Look at Roland who is pup king but he will go on till he finds his 100kg+. lol... Spending time with friends and family is allot of fun. Also never give up cause as i have learned on sealine "if your line is not in the water you won't catch anything" Good luck buddy!!

Thnx Cheetah. Just getting little dispondent in pursuit of the ----->:fswim

And you are right. Time with friends and family was memorable considering some of them have passed now but I am a practical person. In saying so I have given myself a year to ply what I have learnt on Sealine and others and most of it makes sense as it has taught me what I have been doing wrong.

LOL:hyst::hyst::hyst::hyst::hyst::hyst:

Reaper you should become an writer, best fluid reading and some nice laughs.

I hear you. Edd fishing is the worst from the S&R and I gave up years ago, went over to the dark side and started in-edd fishing with allot of change. In my 3 years of fishing never landed one edd over 20cm. I still hope for one but that will be by luck. Money spent to now well over your 15K and still going strong! I love it!!!

Fishing is an frustrating sport, but still we go and we try, after many blank nights we still try and spend more money on tackle and bait, just to blank.

But we love it, it is in our blood. It relaxes and make for many a good story, exultant memory's that one can not put a price to? I will be waiting for the tackle, you will have allot of luck landing 15 eds in a year. The main problem is you don't fish in PE, here we have been having it.

All seriousness, fishing is not about the money spent or the amount off fish landed, try some more and you will succeed. I was told if you are confidant in what you do you will succeed.

my 2c. good luck. pm me when you want to get rid of your tackle! :wfish

LOL Glad you enjoyed my pain... I suppose if i was going to rant then this would be a good place to do it regarding fishing. I would go to the traffic department to rant regarding traffic violations etc.

As for the tackle well I have a year and Sealine correspondence in hand. Lots more fishing days and nights ahead.... :fishn

For another read on fishing go check out Barry Whareham's articles on the Basil Manning website, I found them to be uniquely informative. Then just up your workrate at the beach and be proactive in trying to get the fish - look for them don't wait for them

Have you ever consider in joining a club ?.It is obviously your personal decision, but here is what it did for me.
1.Saftey we fish in a group and i'm not exposed against the elements.
2.You fish with guys that will assist you with there knowlege based on their experiences.
3.You will fish at places where you have never been before.
4.Take part in Fishing-clinics (in my case) and will gather so much information that you never knew before.
5.Equipment/tackle wise ? the guys are there for you.
There is many more advantages but with what i knew then and what i know now has given me more confidence and yes my blanking days are less !! ::S

Hey Klipvis

I am loathed to join clubs because I get so involved with events and planning. I'll PM Galjoen to enquire what the requirements are and hear what he has to say. As for the wife well she complained about my fishing once...Just once. I am happily divorced now. :::S

So Sunday after battling the bamboo fish all of Friday Swaer convinces me to join him at Wolfgat for those of you who havent been I have posted a series of pics.
It is probably the deepest fishing area along the False Bay coast line on surf...

Anyway we hit blanks for most of the day and decide to trek along the coastline "putting in the work" . Some spots will leave you bruised ,grazed or even worse if you are not careful. Anyway we started at 12 midday and I strike my first edible since the start of the thread. A pan size White Stump. Bloody hell I caught it on the second spot we fished from and Swaer did say he saw my rod dip a bit before we packed up. The difference was I used a Prawn and white mussel cocktail.

He went for the hook that had the prawn... and then the seals came and that was that until around 7 but it was home time.
