So arrived in Witsand late Thursday evening and went down to Skuitbaai at about 11H00 to catch low tide and get some pencil bait. Water was brutally cold and at 1H30 to 2H00 in the water only came out with 6 pencil bait - either they have decided the Breede is not for them or they closed up their holes for the weekend.
Took the kids to the Klip kraaltjie the next day to catch some klipvis in the jetty and put out two rods with pencil bait. Two good pulls did not deliver - sadly...!
The next morning got some tjokka from Sands and with some pilcard in hand took off up river - stopped off at Karoolskraal for some harder with the cast net but there was nothing - not even the small ones jumping through the holes in the net...they probably followed the pencil bait....!?!? Gave up the cast net for a bad joke and went to rooi klippies to try out the tjokka and pilchard - nothing - a few small pecks put not even a varkie! Home again dissappointed.
Monday morning the sea was looking good so we ran out through the mouth and towards Moodie se Put - looking for a pinnacle. All my GPS waypoints are on another GPS. A few Barbel, a hammer head and a juvenile black tip later we headed home dreading the reported NW that would be coming from CT.
ALthought glass had fallen quite remarkably the weather did not change that much and the front must have just missed us - by yesterday the barometer had climbed again and the place was a jewel as always.
The water was quite cold and also very clear - yesterday i stood close to San Remo on the hill overlooking Skuitbaai and I could se how a Duiker was decemating a school of harder - actually seeing the bird swimming under water.
I dont know of many other fish that was caught in the river - a few assorted reds coming from the sea.
It would be great to hear other guys experience!
It it still better to be in Witsand than in Cape Town - even if it is raining!
