So after much deliberation I decide not to buy a new boat but to rebuild my 19 foot Tomcat that is only 8 years old.
I knew the boat was taking on water as it would drip for weeks and was noticeably heavier as we were battling to turn her on the beach. Deck off rotten and waterlogged.

No bulkheads at all whole boat held together with foam.
The little bit of wood in the deck is waterlogged and rotten.

Have you got more photo's? if so please post. I have a suspicion that mine maybe suffering a similar ailment - 6 years old.

glad you not selling her had a awesome day at sea on her a while back

are you going to re power her ? electronics etc ?

anyways will be watching..... love a rebuild thread

The guy doing it for me is Gavin van der Walt.
He is a local boat builder here, and is personally involved with the work does not leave it to employees.

I don't know Gavin but have only heard good things. I've seen his 23ft Gunya Gunya at it's a really good/strong boat. After the Tom Cat that would be my goto boat.

Is this acceptable for a 8 year old boat if something has not happened to it? Surely this is not right?

Surely when the hull is built, they use bulkheads at certain distances for strength? I understand weight is a issue, but longevity and strength are as important in my mind.....they put these in aircraft wings and fuselages for a good reason. I don't think this is good publicity for tomcat especially as you paying a premium price for their products!!

Cannot be, can only be bad workmanship from before. I have a 1995 original Dave Oelofsen Ski Vee 500 and she is dry as a bone when you take the plug out the back. Even after 4 days on Jozini(being in the water all the time). Mine still has bottles in and the drain plug is brass with thread, looks like they don't build them like they use to anymore.

I hope your remake is successful and many hours of pleasure ahead.

The hull has now been ground to dry glass. Tomorrow the start the first of 3 layers of glass on the inside.
