Small Boat Motor Options

Hi All , long time reader researching , but first proper post top ask advice

I have bought a cathedral hull runabout for some bass fishing with son but now need motor. 3.1m x 1.2

Possibly start with sneaker for now on small dams.

but ideally want some form of out board for bigger dams

Say 2 - 5 Hp

1) Parsun's look good from purchase price than similar service cost to others.

2) Is a mariner or Yamaha that much better ?   I am told resale , but my 50hp Yamaha  is proving to not have a great resale value ( or just no demand )

3) With the already low fuel usage of a 5hp is a 4-stroke any advantage over a two stroke

Any opinion and first hand experience you can share will be greatly appreciated .

Hi, a friend of mine has a Parsun which is a 3 or 3.5hp I think. He bought it new and has ben using it for the past 6 months on a small f/g dingy here in the EC. He loves it and has nothing but good things to say about it. I saw him just yesterday and asked him about it....says it is going fine. He uses it on the Fish River, Kariega and mainly trolls with it.....runs on air he says.

Hi Milosh.

I have the Parsun 5.8 HP 2-Stroke. I have used it a lot since I purchased it and I have not had any issues with the motor. The services are R 500 a pop and the power on the motor is really good for its size. The fuel consumption is excellent. Typically I will take 6.25 L of fuel out for the day (6-7 hours of which 3-4 hours is running time) and will have about 1.1 L left. I go full throttle most of the time.

The inflatable I use it on is similar in dimension to your boat but it has quite a lot of drag in the water and I still manage a good 22 kmph on the water in calm conditions.

I purchased mine at Motor King and Marine in PTA. They have spares and do the services for me and it comes with a warranty. Personally I believe that Yamaha and the like are excellent but their price is insane and that takes the joy out of buying one. I don't believe that in the small outboard class paying R15k for a 5 hp is justifiable. I got an excellent motor and inflatable for less than that. All new and with warranties etc etc etc. It serves its purpose and functions beautifully.

Regards

Chris

I have a little Suzuki 5hp 4-stroke and I'm totally in love with it. It goes on the sniff of an oil rag and is so quiet.

I also have a Parsun 9.8 and although I haven't used it really, it seems quite ok, runs remarkably smoothly. I do know that they have crap resale value though. I think there is a lot of market bias toward the well known brands.

Not sure about the likes of Titan/Seanovo etc. At least Parsun is well established here. Also the chaps at Motor King are very helpful.

Thank you for inputs ,  seems Parsun is a workable affordable solution , just resale an issue.

I think testin the waters with an entry level 2-5 hp parsun is way to go .

Now to stop thinking and drive through to Motor King and Marine !
