Sliding Rietvlei

Why do you think that in some dams the fish takes the top sliding hook and in other dams they predominantly take the bottom hook?

I fished Aston lake again over the long weekend for half a day and  4/4 of my fish came out on the top slider.

what does this mean? Is it a sandy bank, Is my bottom hook not available for the fish..?

Do you change your bait size or put a floatie on the bottom hook to ensure that you have a good chance of catching more fish?

Any ideas or insight will be appreciated.

I never bait the two hooks the same, and therefor I reckon they go for a specific bait, instead of a specific hook. Do you bait your two hooks the same?

Waldok:

I normally try one rod with swd and the other with floats. If they pick the swd I change both rods. The same will go for the floaties.

Naruto:

I try and keep my hooklinks the same lenght, however I can say that the top hooklink I used Sunday was shorter than normal.

I will also play around with a flaotie and a kappie and another method is use is to cover the whole float with dough

Just an additional thought here.
If Aston Lake's bottom is quite muddy, the sinker might sink away into the mud and pull the bottom hook into the mud/silt. But then again you would feel this when you reel in.
If you use a longer shaft-line, the top hook might also move up the shaft line as the trace decends down in the water after the cast. The top hooklink would then rest on top of the silt.
What did you bait on the top hook and did you perhaps dip it in something specific?
Ever tried the same with a Vaaldam trace to 'test' your theory or just to swop the tactics on the two different hooks as an exsperiment?

PI: The trace I use is very light, but it feels like it comes up immediately when I start reeling in. I dont feel much drag or extra weight. Does this then mean that the bottom might be less muddy than I expected?

PI: I will try the longer shaft approach and the Vaaldam strop with the gummies. What will be a good lenght to try, I think maybe 10cm above the weight? I will make the hooklinks about 12cm long.

"What did you bait on the top hook and did you perhaps dip it in something specific?"

PI: I baited it with a fine swd, as the floaties didnt get a bite at all. I didnt dip the swd in any specific dip either. Why do you ask, is there any effect the dip will make to the bait?

PI: I tried the same traces with different baits i.e swd and floats. Both these traces were fished more or less on the same spot. (trying to build a kol). I havent tried the differentb hook sizes. Do you suggest one normal hook (Linx) and then a slightly bigger hook or just two bigger hooks? I dont really know the sizes, but I wont go to big.

Thank you for the insight, im still learning a lot and I really appreciate all the insight. S/L is a great place to gain experience.

Maybe the fish didn't like the bomb and took the top sliding hook because it is the furthest from it.

Just an idea...

I dont think so, but I will give it a go in any case. I will try Mr. Muti's bom as im currently using The Original's bom.

I FISHED ASTON LAKE A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN THE WATER LEVEL WAS LOW. THERE WAS A BANK IN THE WATER JUST BELOW THE GATE. I WADED TO THIS BANK BUT BEFORE I REACHED IT I WAS IN KNEE DEEP SOFT MUD. THATS WHY I SUGGESTED THE EXPLANATION.

AT CERTAIN VENUES WE FISHED DURING INTER PROVINCIAL COMPS, WE USED A VAALDAM TRACE WITH THE BOTTOM SHAFT LINE IN THE REGION OF 40cm EVEN.

I THOUGHT THAT IF YOU DIPPED IT, THE FISH WENT AFTER THE SPECIFIC FLAVOUR.

IT'S DIFFICULT TO COMMENT ON THE HOOK SIZES, BECAUSE I DONT KNOW THE SIZE YOU'RE CURRENTLY USING.

IT'S STRANGE THAT IF YOU BAITED BOTH HOOKS WITH THE SWD, THE FISH STILL TOOK THE TOP HOOK. OTHER EXPLANATION IS THAT THE TOP HOOK SETTLES NEXT TO THE BOMB AND THE FISH SLURPS UP THE BOMB (WITH THE DIP/FLAVOUR) AND SUBSEQUENTLY THE SWD OF THE TOP HOOK (AND GET HOOKED BEFORE IT EVEN BOTHERED WITH THE OTHER HOOK LYING FURTHER AWAY).

JPS:

Thanks for the reply

Misguide:
