Sliding a bait

Hi

When sliding a bait, how do you know when your bait has reached the ring at the bottom? How do you know when to stop "shaking" the rod to get the bait to reach the end?
Is there a way to determine this?

Well it depends where you fish i guess, if you sliding onto a bank off a beach then it would take quite long, but when sliding off deep water points it will go much quicker, like at robberg you dont really have to shake at all as your bait just flies out because of such deep water. Also when you slide you dont strike anyway so if your slide is not down all the way it wont be much of a problem unless it is wrapped up around your line, but on most places i slide for about 5 mins

Hi Jannie
I am no expert like some of the guys on site. I normally shake my rod till I cant see the bait anymore. Then I shake it for another 6 minutes giving long strokes. Every now and then I give more line and walk backwards so the line does not get damaged by friction in the same place. It also depends how far you cast/swam your sinker out.

All go's on how big your bait is hey, begin with small quick shakes to get it through the surf, " try read the wave as to not let the big sett's of wave's break over your bait, as it will more than likely wrap your bait up around your main line" once u got your bait behind the breaker's and u cant see it any more try see witch way the curent is pushing a walk 20m up curent and try get to higher ground and change to longer slower shaking strok's for 10min or so... after that every half hour or so i like giving my rod a few shake's for 2min to make sure that bait is down properly....

NB.. U knw if u get a plastik packet wrap't up around your line that fealing it make's , u should get the same fealing if your slide is wrap't up around your main line.... one will never knw if your bait has gone down to your ring, but if the condition's arnt right for sliding rather throw a bait as your hook up rate and landing rate will be much higher...

if the sea isnt2 rough, after the 7-10 minz of longer strokes,i give the rod a few short sharp shakes with a tight line,i can feel a light ting as the slide bounces on the stopper ring.its a definite different feeling to before.takes some practice and the more you slide, the more you will notice it.

fishfinder you have fine senses for sure , my advice on what I have seen is on sandy beaches take your slide with you when you wade and attach it to your line as deep as possible and shake the slide there untill it is long gone under the water , release your drag to a point where you still have enough tension but dont free the sinker and while walking back use big up and down movements untill you reach the beach then try and find the highest spot and shake the rod by using big strokes for 5 minutes at least.

also important is to use the correct slides with as less places where line can get stuck.3/4 oz minimum weighted is pref when the sea is uppish/normal , the weight just makes it go down faster and keep the bits that can tabgle below the line .some guys dont use weights at all on beaches , but I dont like it.

as far as depth is concerned the deeper the better.

Tell me SOmething chaps - these Long strokes you speak Of - is the down stroke Faster than the up stroke or vice versa??
I have seen some guys shake the rod with the point pointing STRAIGHT up in the air -they then stand and shake it like you would shake a tree type of thing .
I find i am too impatient in getting the flippin bait down Man .
then when i reel in - this is a sign your bait Aint goin all de way to the Bottom floor - your sinker pulls loose , comes up - and then after 4 or 5 winds you feel the line weigh down-it's now reached the slide , and obviously you can feel the added weight of your (untouched !) bait hit the stopper ring .
I'ts hardly amusing to be able to bliksem a sinker 123 , but waste More then a third of that distance cuz your bait aint goin all the way down .....$%$##^$#%

so .
which method of shake is more beneficial - tree , or the huge 12-9 pm shakes , with one faster than the other ??
