I know this is the wrong forum BUT Ive had no answer from the guys in the boating forum: please help.

I have booked a day course which apparently gives the participant a skippers license for the 5NM distance. If there is anyone who has done this test, please tell me if it is difficult and what can I do to prepare? Im doing it in Langebaan on the 31/03/07 with a guy by the name of Billy. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

I am from durban so im not sure how it works in CT i did do a skippers but for the inland waters ticket only i am busy studing for the full ticket.To my knowledge i dont think they can really do the ticket in 1 day it takes alot of time to do the course properly and the studing is verry intensive ie. map work etc.....

You also have to do surf launches and sheltered launches to so that will also take time plus you have to log your hours.So who eber is taking you on this day course make sure that they are certified examiners SAMSA so that you dont end up having to do it all over again.

This is what i know is reqired for DBN so i might be wrong please dont hold me to it.

I'm also from Durban, but these regulations are national and I think you are being taken for a ride. One of the requirements of getting the ticket is that you need to have attended 20 hours of lectures and practical training, which is clearly not being done in the case where you are attending a one day course.

I would contact SAMSA in Cape Town and find out from the horse's mouth, if I were you. They are the only ones who really can give you definitive answers.

Hi Nick,

I must agree with OSD. To my knowledge there is no such thing as a day course for a 5nm ticket, not even for 1nm. Even the inland waters ticket takes at least 15 hrs of lectures, with an exam to follow. Riymos is also correct in saying that it is a very intense course. Follow OSD's advice and contact SAMSA for the correct information. It would be a shame to go through the time and expense on someting which may not be legitimate, just to have to redo it.

Guys i think im a bit lost so is it right that you do the ticket in 1 day if so then

i will definately have to come up and do mine there lol lol

I've done mine fairly recently. The basic Skipper's Offshore Licence entitles the holder to travel up to 40nm offshore, depending on number of engines, radio and safety equipment. The theory lectures took 2 days with an exam a couple of weeks thereafter. The practical took 4 or 5 days with 12 or 15 surf launches being the minimum requirement. Only 3 launches were allowed to be logged on any given day so as to make sure that the candidate experiences varying sea conditions. I'm sorry to say, but the 1 day course sounds shaky. Check with NSRI and SAMSA. :?

I have contacted the necessary ppl and this is all legit. Sorry to Billy, it was me not listening properly. Sorry for causing a stir guys.
