Hi

Need some more info please...

I have to do the whole licence thing. Prefer to do it on West Coast - Saldanha/St Helena area.

What category is best? I will probably only fish in the St Helena Bay area. Will not try to go halfway to Brazil.

Where do I start? Any training providers in that area? Can I do hours on my own boat?

Do I need surf launchendorsment to launch boat at St Helena Bay? There are almost no waves. Looks like Vaal dam... SAMSA docs mentions East and South Coasts - no West Coast?

If you are in St Helena, there is a guy advertising on the board at the Spar and the local cafe who presents skippers licenses. This was Dec 2013, don't know if he still does it.

I recon category D would be fine for you it allows you up to 5 nautical miles from shore , there is not much stress at ST Helena , I go out with category R , and a single 115 Mariner motor , most boats launching from St Helena are single motors , and then you have all the crayfishermen at Paternoster , going out in their little bathtubs with a little motor , way deep to net crayfish.

I think there may be a mis interpretation here. This is the category/class of the VESSEL and not the skippers ticket shown above. This will let you know what the Vessel is permitted to do but not necessarily the Skipper who will fall in one of below classes.


Type: Classes/Skippers tickets

Category R - Inland Waters

Category E - 1 Nautical Mile from shore

Category C - 15 Nautical mile from shore

Category B - 40 Nautical mile from shore

Training done by an approved SAMSA Lecturer/Examiner

Take a chill pill Russel. I am trying to help. The vessel classification of category D does exist, but there is no Cat D COC. If you want to go 5 nautical miles, you would need to have a Cat C.
