Skippers and COF question

Hi all just some clarification please
I dont have a skippers ticket at the moment.
I bought a Duck and need to get it on the water sooooon.

The practical training for seaworthy CAT E skippers is gonna take me a while. And i want to use the boat at the dam in the meantime.

Can i get a Cat R skipper ticket for now just to get some Water Time(on the dam) and do my ocean training when possible.Once i have my Hours and launches do i have to pay again to get a CAT E Ticket or can a CAT R ticket be upgraded to a CAT E.

Question 2) I already have a CAT E COF number on the boat that expires next month. If i re-register the boat as CAT R can they use the same number?. And then again later on upgrade it to a CAT E still using the same number.

Thanks for any advise
Regards

You will have to pay again, thats how they make there money.
its a bit of a gray area ,with a cat R skippers you should not be skippering a Cat E vessel ,but that said our new boat is CAT B and we skipper it with a Cat C skippers ,we just are not allowed to go more than 15 Nm
I would reregsiter it as a cat E ,I dont think there will be a problem skippering on a river our dam

Boat no's etc will change when u register and do the COF for the boat in your name.
If you do cat r will have to pay for the cat E upgrade
(best to do cat E)
Each upgrade has a test / price.

Enjoy

Thanks for the responses.
My questions are answered

My buddy with his skippers is not always available to take me out to sea and practise launches. Thus the need just to get a CAT R in the interim so I can at least get the boat to a dam or two, But is is not worth it if I have to write the exam twice, one for CAT R and then again for CAT E which if I am not wrong is the same exam.

I am not sure how it works there but it should be the same ,that is do your Cat E theory test and then you have a few months in which to do your prac.in that time you can get some water time with another skipper on board, wil save bucks in the long run, here they allow the guys three months from writing the test in which to do the practical then they ,charge a extra R150.00 or so if you dont do it within that time
