With high hopes we went eersterivier this weekend. Our target species were bronze bream and cracker during the day and then some toothy critters at night. After a very disappointing three days of hard fishing with nothing of note to show for it we decided to finish early on sunday and just relax for the rest of the day.

I took some old bait that had become a bit dodgy in the sun and tossed it down the cliffs into the water almost directly below the house. and trust me, its a good couple of meters straight down - I get a bit queasy looking down there. It wasn't long before we noticed some dark shadows moving about...

Now this is serious "hengel" It felt a bit weird fishing from the "stoep" and at that angle down the cliff, but it wasn't long before riaan's ratchet started complaining.

This fishy was fighting dirty and always going in the wrong direction. It reefed itself at least 3 times and there was a lot of clambering and scampering accross the rocks. I had to hold the line on a high point while riaan was climbing down to the beach. It was a pretty interesting experience as the were loads of cross reefs and he had to move quite a distance to get parallel with them.

Finally he got to a spot where he could put on some pressure - by this time the sharkie was pretty tired, but still had just enough energy to head into the rocks in front of him.

Anyway he finally landed it after a good 40 minutes more or less. We were talking about it afterwards - it wouldn't have been half the fun catching that fish after a 5 minute fight at an "easier spot"

Perfect hookup with the circle.

Blue is the route that riaan followed and red fish's. The black circles are where the fish reefed itself

Lekker looking spot. Where is that exactly? Nice catch too. That spotty looks very skinny for its length!

tsitsikamma coast. It was pretty skinny - no food maybe. there are absolutely no more reef fish and its right next to a protected area - will get to that later.

Thinking back, it was luck that the fish was landed. Pulled it over 2 reefs with a .65mm leader. Still have to get the lenth. But Adam it was a legendary weekend. Post the pic of your trace...
