Ek het besluit ek kan nie nog n liga seisoen net met my Grand Wave 50 en Shimano 20/40 hengel nie( het my Trinidad verkoop som paar jaar gelede) ….

 

Wou toe Saltigas gaan koop maar besluit toe om eers met mense te praat wat katrolle regmaak want hulle behoort seker die beste te weet watter katrolle gee probleme. Ek het n baie lang gesprek gehaat met Keith Murison, en volgens hom is die  beste katrol wat jy kan koop  die Torium 30. Met n paar klien modifikasies is hy gelyk of beter as die Trinidad 30 of Saltiga 50. Ek het toe begin rond bel oor pryse en die algemene prys vir hulle is R 1 300… Die beste hier in die Kaap wat ek kon kry is R1150… Een van die handelaars wat ek gebel het, het gesê as ek meer as 4 koop sal hy dit vir my gee vir R1 025  afgelewer enige plek in SA.  Die wat belangstel mail my asb by emile at mighty.co.za. As enige van julle beter pryse afgelewer in SA kan kry mail my ook asb. Wil ook graag hoor wat die beste prys is wat julle kan kry op n Trinidad 40?

Modification

 

Keith vervang blykbaar die drive shaft bush met n bearing. Dan doen hy iets aan die dog(anti reverse pawl) …. Die laaste wat opsioneel is, is hy sit dan leather drag washers in!  

 

Dit is glo baie belangrik om daai bush te vervang want die materiaal waarvan dit gemaak is vreet glo in die casing in en dan word die drive shaft los. Kos jou dan n nuwe casing koop.

me and my buddy was looking at the saltists / torium

by all accounts the torium wins in terms on it's "harde hout" status by being able to handle the rigors wading better.

So it looks like we getting toriums. will confirm with him, and let you know if we in or not by tomorrow.

But why is the 30's so popular. it seems to have limited line capacity?

i am looking also, the saltist and torium are very similar, i feel that saltist's are sealed better for wading, their weak point is the drag that wears twice as fast. but i definitely get a better cast with the saltist and power is about the same. i just wish they would change the coating on the saltist to something more hardy.

Feeling bored so I'm gonna chuck my zillion zim $ in!
I've had nothing but irritating problems with my saltist. I wade extensively with my reels and put them through the grinder on a regular basis.
The spool bearings on my saltist are shot.Bear in mind that these are sealed "corrosion resistant bearings".
The bearings on my shimano's are still going strong and these,as we all know, are unsealed.
I service my reels at least twice a month during the season so lack of maintenance is not a factor.
Whist the saltist is good reel under the right conditions,my experience has been that it simply cannot match the shimano for sheer all round toughness.

Price for Torium 30 at Gani's Witbank R1050.00. Don't settle for more that's the price you can negotiate for with Husain. Waiting for your prices in JHB, as it is always good to shop around. 

Why does Keith modify the Torium, what is the purpose, beter casting reliability etc?and the cost involved. Thanks for the info so far Expat.

Volgens Keith is die Saltist nie juis gemaak vir wading nie en corrode seker van die binneste parte baie gouer. En die clutch arm  breek ook glo maklik af en is dan baie duur om te vervang….

 

As ek n Katrol wil koop kyk ek na die volgende!

 

1. Drag…. Smooth drag is vir my die belangrikste[/*]

4. En dan eers gear power… dis waarvoor jy n visstok het.[/*]
5. Dan prys( Snaaks genoeg die Torium is die goedkoopste van die moderne katrolle)

As ek reg is het Weeds al sy groot haaie insluitende die Sa record Bronze Whaler  van 227Kg en nog een van 130Kg + gevang met sy Torium 30…. So ek dink line capacity is n probleem nie.

Ja, Keith is busy with my saltist at the moment.He sorted out the clutch for me awhile ago.Had the reel for a month or so and it was already giving problems.
I've told him to go mal with the reel and see what he can do to bring it up to scratch.
We'll see what happens.

Reliability!!!

 

Dis glo n moet om die drive shaft bush met n bearing te vervang( Dit kan jy self doen). Dan vyl hy glo die anti revers ratchet in sodat dit nie sal gly nie! Soos ek reeds gesê het is die drag washers n persoonlike keuse, maar ek het nog nie probleme gehaat met sy leather drag washers nie!

Jaco ek praat onder korreksie, maar ek dink hy vra R150. Dan is dit die bearing, modification op anti reverse, leather washers en kyk dat die spoel reg is…. Dink hy service sommer ook die katrol.

Thanks for the info, dis baie interessant om te weet sal dit definitief doen met myne. Het jy enige spec vir die bearing n nommer etc sal die mod dalk maar self moet doen siende dat die kaap bietjie baie ver is vir my om dit in te laat doen. Wat vra hy vir die mod? Bietjie mana vir die mod.

Lyk my ons het op dieselfde tyd geskryf, thanks vir die laaste info ek sal hom bel, ek wil net eers uitvind wat is courier kostes soontoe en terug. Ek dink dit kan dalk die moeite werd wees om dit te doen.

Hahaha, not only the language, but fishing terminology varies widely!

 

Toriums are very good reels out the box, I have yet to see one fail and there are plenty around.  In the US the guys tend to upgrade the drag washers on these reels but nothing else.

I have a Saltist & Saltiga and regard both as excellent reels as well though did also have some issues with my Saltist clutch lever which is poorly designed in my opinion.

I don't see how any reel can realistically withstand getting sea water inside, corrosion resistant probably means just that!

Apologies for that, but we can't give all our secrets away to all, just joking. What Expat was writing is that the guys are modifying the torium reels by replacing the drive shaft bush with a bearing and also filing the reverse gear ratchet to prevent it from sliping and last but not least replacing the drag washer with a leather washer. This is done to better the reliability of a already very reliable reel. urs4 your best catch is that a king mackerel (cuda) of 26kg caught with a spanish mackerel? That's quite a nice catch, I'm still waiting for the day to catch one that size.
