Site casting for shark

Had a blast, started to understand this shark fishing thingy, being an edibles f/man.

Wow what fun, was at witsand for the weekend, friends told me many sharks visible from the shore at low tide, just behind a rock ledge, grabbed some tackle / rod and ran.

Found about 20+ 1.5m _+ sharks, think they were greys, looked like they were feeding in the shallows, just behind the ledge, near the tidal pool. I did not have strong enough tackle to land them so after the third loss I stopped as did not want to have too many sharks running around with 11 /0 mustard circles as jewelery.

Using 30 pound braid, a elf steel trace and a 11 /0 mustard no sinker I stood in the water on the ledge, casted a whole small mullet into the sharks and VAS and what a awesome run, drag on almost full on a sl 50 sh and zzzzzzz the reel was doing its thing, first one bit thru the steel, second one flattened the clip, like straight! and the third cut my braid on the reef. but was a gas, adrenaline pumping and running up and down to retied traces and scrounging the tackle I had with for something / anything stronger, but no heavy tackle.

Gives huge respect for those landing those huge beasts of 100 kg plus. Do not think these little ones were more than 40kg, left them in piece to carry on feeding.

At times the group were 4 - 8m away and tossed the bait and watched them turn and yeh go vas....

Thought worthy of a post here! pity the tackle was not strong enough or I could have landed 10 easy.

Any ideas why there were so many, though sharks were solitary animals and what were they feeding on.

its the best sight in the world. when we fish off the reefs, we see the big spotties cruising in the shallows. we just freeline a mullet head out to them, no sinker... and when you go vas you really know about it. you say it was greys?

Sure they weren't hammers. I have had heaps of fun with packs of them before off the boat. Strong b*stards!

Hi Barryfish

I would continue trying on the lighter tackle, would be an accomplishment if you land one!

It's pretty cool to get them like that and I commend you on not keeping on snapping off on them. Two weeks ago we saw a guy loose a dozen or so smoothounds because his tackle wasnt up for it, we managed to land 6 of which 4 had other hooks in there mouths. Next time use 1.3mm leader and 0.55 mainline, it will still be fun!

Was on Saturday 6 pm low in front left of duinepark, there is a ledge and a gully behind, looked like sharks were pushing fish into the reef and feeding. their tails wold come out briefly, was awesome sight so many and so close,

Must say a few swells came over water got knee deep and yeh, I moved back quite quick.

I had my spinner bag and a few made up rigs, more for elf / kob.

First rig 20pound blood wire / 2 x daitchi red 5/ / 4 0 on single swivel to 30 pound braid no sinker (1 x whole mullet)
broke off, no pigtail on the swivel (perhaps my haywire twist?)

Second (no more blood wire rig) 1 x std steel elf trace section onto single swivel muatad 11 / 0 circle hook on the clip whole mullet(bent clip, looked like a straight piece of wire.

Third - removed the clip and looped the wire through the 11/0 mustard circle hook, added another wire looping through the swivel end and tied swivel direct to braid. large chokka slab and whole pike, no more mullet. broke off the braid

I had no fluro leaders with me, and no other line, I packed quick, after the first one I sent my daughter back to get my bucket as was killing the ^&*() holding on.

Think I may have used too much drag, but they were all over the place, left right out to sea and back, but some nice runs and great to hear the reel sing.

The best I think was being able to see the shark, toss the bait max 10m and see the shark turn and watch then take the bait, 2 pulls and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, so easy, so much fun. would have loved to land one, next time.

I did not see any spots, dark fin / tail whiter under the mouth belly, but I only saw flashes as they were tearing left and right and out in front of me.
