Sinker burried in the sand

hello guys,i need some help,normally when i am sliding a big bait with a heavy sinker eg:9 ounce it normally gets burried in the sand so much that i have severe difficulty in geting it out,i normaly hold the rod straight and pull,i know this is not the right way and can damage your reel,what techniques do you guys use 2 loosen the sinker without doing what i do..share your expertise guys..cheers

Ummm, thats the exact technique i used. I am a lot happier when my sinker almost gets burried in the sand as i know that i have a good solid foundation to work on to get my slider to the end of the line.

And i doubt you will do any damage to your reel when flat sticking your rod to get your sinker out. I put my rod over my shoulder and walk working the sinker out the sand. And ive had no probs doing it this way.

Sharkattack everybody does it the same as you , I just put my thumb on the spool aswell to assist when pulling the sinker out.You can also open your wires slightly to make them pop open if the sea is calm , but in a strong sea you want that sinker to sit vas.With .55 main line and min 1mm leader your line wont break.

Hey Marine,
It takes a lot of strain off your reel if you wrapped the line around your rod about 4 or 5 wraps just ahead of the reel itself.
Tight Lines Boet.

i wouldn't wrap it around the rod, you might easily damage the blank by compressing it. rather wrap it twice around your arm and off you go.

Thankz alot guys and hear i was thinking i am doin the wrong thing..just another question, is it posible 2 bend the shaft of your reel while doing it this way,sorry i know it is a stupid ?..a guy also told me 2 wrap the line around the handle of the reel and then you walk back,so there is no strain on the reel itself..is this advisable..(AS FOR WRAPPING THE LINE AROUND MY ARM....and what if a fish picks my bait at the same time and screams off,.u can imagine where that would leave me lol

Has anybody ever heard of this or experienced it firsthand? What are the blanks made of these days?

During the times I fished the salty stuff, this was standard procedure with ordinary fibreglass blanks.

You mean to say medical aid will pay for your arm but not for the rod. LOL

If your blank is made of Carbon, there is a strong chance you will introduce a weak point in the blank by wrapping the line around the rod... Cut a piece off a broom handle and wrap the line around this and then pull or walk backwards...

Another thing that I do is while walking backwards.... moving the rod up and down over my shoulder... comes loose much easier !!

How much weaker do you guys make the sinker line compared to the main line. I normally make a knot in my sinker line, as I loose to many sinkers if I make the sinker line to weak and slide.

Kraanies i normally make my sinker trace with .70 nilon. Havent had my sinker line break from throwing or getting it out of the sand as yet...
