Has anyone used a Silstar HF-40 for dropshot and if so how did it perform. I own one and want to put some braid on it and use it but dont want to spend the money if its not worth it.

hi barracuda. those are great reels for the price. bought one about 4 or 5 years ago when the 'dropshot'craze began.keep expecting the reel to give up cos of the price but it's still going strong, think i paid about R120. has a strong aluminium spool & handle & a very capable drag.have since bought an daiwa excellor but still use this reel often. also use the reel frequently off a fishing ski where it gets totally submerged. have caught plenty of fish with this reel including queen mackeral up to 4kgs. i recon go for it.

Alcocks in PE use them to catch elf and leeries, and reckon they are pretty good.
Bought one for my son about a year ago, he catches grunter on it (loaded with 5.5kg maxima green), and so far so good.

If you look after it it should look after you, clean it regularly and grease and oil it.

I've got an old Silstar grinder that I've had for at least 13 years(could be more, my dad got it for me when I was a laaitie).

Still going strong, and still catching fish.
