Hi,

Guys won't easily give away spots where you can target those species.  If you can track down James Lawson-Smith, he might give you some pointers.  I dived Sandbaai a few times and sometimes saw some decent fish in the shallows.  You need ot be careful as there is a reserve there, and there are reserves in thw town as well.

I had a few spots where you could get both those species, but they are past Gansbaai harbour and so no longer diveable due to the new rules 'cos they can't police the perly poaching.

If you come back towards Kleinmond, Betty's Bay, Hangklip there are some areas you can try find them.  Moonlight bay to the right of the lighthouse has them occasionally, there is also a hole that the fishermen target at Dawidskraal that I always wanted to try as they get steenbras there regularly, but never got it right.  Just be careful of the fishermen if you do go in there.  Maasbaai can produce fish as well, where the slipway is, but be careful of boats.

But to get fish like that in the western Cape you have to put in a lot of time - just cover as much ground as you can.

Cheers,

Tony

Try Vermont but you are going to swim alot. Vast barren stretches with hardly a hottie and then you get a small room sized spot loaded with 5 species. And these spots move. There are some good fish around but no garantees. If water conditions allow, which is not often, work the 12- 15m line.

That whole coast can be frustrating most of the time but I think it is one place left where you can get a SA record Roman from the shore. My buddy shot a +10pd roman in 3m water deep in the kelp.

And before I forget, some of the worst kelp crawling in the Cape!

Holbaai, just other side of Betties Baai close to Hang Klip. Bit of a walk, there is a reef in the middle of the bay, about 150 - 200m swim. Water has to be calm and clean, lots of species especially Galjoen.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Which of these spots will be good in June / July?

All should be fine at that time, just have to find a gap in the fronts to get it flat enough to get in.  Will be plenty of gallie, and a chance of steenbras, but the cracker are most likely to be gone.
