Shongweni Dam

Hi

I'm going camping at Shongweni dam in two weekends time and want to target some big barbel. I'll be staying at the fishing camp on the far side of the dam and want to setup a rod for barbel. I'll probably use my 6ft6 med rod with my baitcaster with 30lb braid. Was thinking of using chicken livers and hoping for a big boy. I'll be there from friday to sunday so I can setup a swim or feed, whatever it's called. Does anyone have any tips or tricks, or any stories about the dam. I've caught plenty bass there, but this will be the first time i'm trying for a barbel. I've once seen the head and tail of a barbel there on the far side in the grass. I'm assuming someone caught it and took the body to eat but dumped the head and tail. The head was about the size of a A5 sheet of paper...(half an A4)

So any info will be good. Thanks.

I'm interested to find out if you had any luck catching your barbel at Shongweni.

I've been playing with the idea of taking the kids on a fishing / camping weekend seeing that the surf is totally blown out.

Cheers

Hi mate

I Been fishing at shongweni a few times for barbel. the first couple time on chicken livers had no luck at all.

however a guy from this forum (nobbles) let me in a a little secret. Day old baby chickens they just cant resist. two minute after the first line went in we had one. from then we were just pulling them out the water size ranging from about 2 - 5kg's.

We went camping there for one night and pulled out 27 of the buggers and lost about 20

Howsit jugga,

Your hundred percent there. You put a baby chicks on that reed bank and stagger baita back to find that shoal and its going to be a busy night like jugga had. You get a night hawk and a lightish rod and its some great fun.
