Hi Guys

Just want to see if there are anybody sharing my problem...

I recently got the Stradic 5000FJ, and it is a great reel, BUT, when holding the rod like I have always done, I get rapped on the knuckles by the rotor arm when reeling. Changing my grip to prevent this, is not at all comfortable, and is not a solution. I have tried the reel on various rods with the same result. Although I am a bit thick fingered in general, this is the only spinning reel in my arsenal where I experience this problem.

Are any of you having the same problem?

Awesome video Aqua... I still need to try out the dipping rod I built.... but I am yet to find a sharp tooth catfish of the rocks here in KZN :fbash

Like I said, I do have thick fingers, but have never had this problem with any other reel. I did find one or two similar complaints from international forums, but very few.

Check if your handle is bent at all.. Does it do a slow side to side wobble if you watch it when it turns? Otherwise take a video as posted above and look at yourself doing it and post it if you don't figure it out..

I also experience the same problem, its not too bad if I grip the rod tightly, but as soon as I release pressure on my index finger the bail arm makes contact.

Exactly what I am experiencing.. will make a video at some stage

It happened to me before, check if your handle's bolt is bent, you can see if it does this elliptical turn or the handle itself goes side to side when you turn it... otherwise it is just a manufacture fault I guess and take it back..Check another in the store, if it doesn't do it and your handle is straight, ask for a fix or replacement.

Thanks will look into it. But it does look like the reel stem is a tad shorter than the rest

I am loving mine.  I am 6" 6' and 115kg and have big hands and not had that problem;  But I can not tell you how I hold the handle.  Might just be thumb and index finger.  Will report back tomorrow.

Haha, I compleeeetely misread your original post, sorry boet..can't help you there, my reeling hand got knuckled, not rod hand.. but to reiterate to take a video and have a look from another angle. Also try it on a different rod that you have and see if that helps you narrow it down, maybe its a combination of reel, rod and/or grip?

hahaha should be plenty just a bit inland :) although the kzn artlure guys almost exclusively troll for their barbel, but there's no reason you cant call em out

post a report and some pics when you do :)

LOL... I first need to find a suitable alternative... will be difficult to beat the stradic... I am quite happy with the Abu Soron that have been paired with my berkley air for probably 5 years now and still going strong. Want to go have a look at the Abu Revo Premium spinning reel... they look rather nice.

From a rod builder's perspective.

I think the for grip where you hold the rod is a bit on the thick side resulting in to little clearance between fingers and bail arm.

Try the reel on a rod with a thinner grip and see if it alleviates the problem. If it does then the solution is to have the foregrip of the rod sanded down to ensure that 3mm additional clearance that you need to keep your fingers/knuckles out the way.

Thanks Craig!

I tried this reel on the Berkley Air, Assassin Amia and Assassin Ocean Spin, and I have the problem on all three rods. I think it is just an unfortunate combination of the slightly shorter reel stem and the where and how I like to grip the rod.

Appreciate all the input guys!

so its you left rod holding hand which is being smacked.

please remember the oaks designing fishing reels are pen pushers, sitting in a office.
the guys that is testing the reels for them are so called, engineers, again pen pushers!!

they don't have hands like us, which could klap you off your feet when you need it!!


imagining your grip of the rod, it seems awkward. why not try holding the rod higher up.
